Payload question.
« on: May 07, 2010, 01:34:54 pm »
Just contemplating a new van and I don't want my choice to inhibit a future decision about a van mounted system. Using Gardiners figures for payload requirements, they say that their 410 litre system weighs 600kg when full so requires at least 800kg payload, and the 610 weighs 800kg full so requires 1100kg minimum. What vans do you use that would take this payload, I reckon realistically with two guys and all the kit, you're probably looking at 1250 kg to be on the safe side. I'm looking at Transits, but I don't want mid to long wheelbase as there are parking issues to consider. So it looks like a swb 300 minimum. Any experiences to share?

Hi Ken
you are looking at the right vehicle or equivalant of Transit T300. Whilst I appreciate the need to keep things as small as possible, I would consider a MWB.
I have a Relay 1100 on an 04 plate SWB. This is fine for me on my own, but space gets a little tight with 2 hose reels, 650l tank, poles, step ladder etc with 2 people. We manage fine occassionally but I would find it cramped on a daily basis. I admit that I am prepared for virtually every eventuallity so do carry more stuff than I really need. I am not a minimalist by nature.
The difference between a SWB and a MWB Transit is only 367mm (just over a foot), but (did - not sure about now) only comes in a medium roof version.
I find the best accessory I have purchased for my van is a set of reversing sensors off Ebay - definitely helps parking when you begin to trust the sensors.
