Title: Poll: What 5/6 year old SWB van would you plump for?
Post by: Carl2009 on September 11, 2021, 01:54:14 pm
Let me know your experiences good and bad :-) Be great if you could be engine-specific as some vans have good and bad engines / gearboxes etc. in the same range.

I have had a 65 plate vivaro for 4 years now and it's been excellent so far,  apart from worn tyres and brakes ive not had to to anything, looks and drives great.

Transit Custom all the way. That said, I would hate to be in the market for a used van at the minute, given the inflated prices.

Mine is not on your list.

Had it for nearly ten years from new. Super reliable as it should be.

Available in the UK from 2009 to 2020.

343nm torque, rear wheel drive, good turning circle, 2500cc, 1089kg payload, cam chain (no belt to replace)

Perfect for 650L system and me.

High spec when launched in 2009.

Mediocre spec now but feels bullet proof.

I had 64 plate custom for 7 years
290 swb limited
Fab pulling power (with full 650 ltrs)dud battery and weak backdoor hinges only real probs, just tyres, brake pads apart from that
I reccomend them wholeheartedly
Ps mpg could be better
70,000 when sold
Great workhorse and a lot of toys 😂

I’m very pleased with relay and boxer - both been excellent runners

I always racked the Hyundai but the tailgate with glass was a deciding factor against it

Another is the new maxus - good spec - bullet proof and a cracking work horse also cheap 😆

So you guys loving the Custom wouldn't agree with my customer - an ex- Jaguar Land Rover mechanic who says ,

"Personally I would never touch a transit.  We used that engine in the Land Rover defenders. Every thing went wrong with those engines. Turbos. Injectors. Oil pumps. Engine ecu randomly give up and I hear the same stories from the transit owners.
Once they hit 90k miles they always spring an oil leak. And the latest 2.2 has a common problem which is related to the egr water cooled side. It fails then it sucks all the coolant from the engine - and burns it straight out the engine cylinders until it is bone dry and boils the poop out of the engine if not before it’s so hot the oil is like water and it siezes. Absolute pile of poop - ford engines.
And avoid Citroen/ Peugeot too as they use this ford engine in their vans."

You had any such problems?

I'd just go for another Ranger.

10 years plus now and no drama.

talk to enough people and you will find issues.....

yes my boxer had the oil pump go,  but it was an easy replacement - my mechanic isn't a fan of the new design and he's ford through and through but you can get a more traditional oil pump if it does go.

think of it this way you clean thousands of windows - occasionally you mess one up - does it make you a bad cleaner ?

overall most van do what you want day in and day out .

I'd look more at load capacity, turning circle, comfort when driving

VW transporter. Had it since 2010 so 11 years. 2007 plate. 650 litre tank fitted. The fly wheel in the clutch went within a year but nothing since. Cam belt done twice, tyres, brake pads etc. A spillage of water knackered the central locking electronics under the drivers seat, easily fixed by garage. Very reliable. Would recommend.

I’ve got a VW T6 Highline. 5 years old now. Love it. 850ltr tank.

The crazy thing is I was looking at what I could sell it for if I was to upgrade, and the same spec, mileage etc is selling for what I got it for 5 years ago! Van prices are crazy. I’ve just replaced our 55 plate Renault Trafic with a 14 plate Vivaro - the price was eye watering! But low mileage, only 27k, which is quite rare for a van.

I probably would have gone for a Custom (franchisee has one) but personally couldn’t justify the price as I wouldn’t drive it. They look great, loads of room, and lots of toys as standard.

Very disappointed with my from new Transporter 67 plate. has 30000miles from new. BLACK.
Break pads went after 18K
door hinge broken
lights in van very dim, don't always work
side door sometimes does not open, especially in Winter.
door rubber cills broken after 8 months.
driver seat just ripping apparently its fair wear and tear.( I have never had fabric wear out that quickly).
EGR valve and two glow plugs, These are very common to blow.
Paintwork seems to mark really easily.
Almost finished second set of new quality tyres.
I am very careful with the van as its a leased, I am hoping the I can make some money back when I have to sell it due to the current climate and van prices
It does drive very well though

You’ll find some horror stories with all vans take a look what’s still driving around years later,Citroen Rely etc older Vivaros hardly see any now unless they are falling apart.

The T32 models are 1.2ton, plenty for an 850l provided you aren’t carrying loads of other crap as well.

Plastic water tanks do a tank that is designed for a Transporter it goes round the wheel arches and is about 12” high only, ply board on top you wouldn’t know it was there to look at it.

vw transporters are well overpriced for what they are(although i do like my new golf GTD...its superb!).....

you cant go wrong buying a ford van IMO

Have ford sorted out the rust these days. Last Ford I had back in 1993 (escort) still rusted on the wheel arches same as my 1974 mk1 escort did!

My last escort was just over 3 years old when both arches stated to bubble! Ford said it was stone chips, funny as bonnet was covered in them but no bubbles.
Good to hear your van is doing well.

Ive been driving round in a 2006 trafic since april. Been great so far, ive had much newer vehicles before and i keep looking but with the daft prices that are about at the moment i just cant bring myself to spend 10 grand on something thats done 100k miles.

I really wish i hadnt sold my truck, i cant find another that isnt 3 grand over what i sold mine for but i keep looking the odd bargain does pop up but you need to be very fast.
