I’m afraid jute is generally regarded as ‘not wet cleanable’, the rug may have to be replaced. Of course, if it’s your rug you have nothing to lose in which case try extraction cleaning it. The chances are the rug will shrink, distort or discolour, maybe all three.

Hi Nobby,
Thank you for your reply.
You have confirmed my thoughts on this.
I am considering envirodri powder as an option.
It is a customers rug, particularly well off as it turns out!
I have collected it so now considering options:-)

If it’s a customers rug I would take it back and explain that your tests show it to be impractical to clean, you don’t want have to buy them a new one! I walk away from every jute carpet/rug that I’m asked to clean. BTW dry cleaning will do no harm but it will do absolutely no good whatsoever.

Totally agree with Nobby here, avoid Jute. I turned down a job yesterday to clean cat crap smell out of a wool rug that the customer had already tried cleaning with household agents and made the smell worse

Thanks Rich ,
I ended up dry vacuuming the main soil out and they have to live with the slight discolouration and I guess any smell will go over time.
Time to get paid for what the customer didn’t want to deal with now
:-)

did you add on the cost of now having to strip down & clean all equipment , or you never thought about any of that

There was enough in the job to cover the costs Of all cleaning and sanitation of kit with a good profit ,so worked out well.
