Title: Police Officers Cannot Stop You Working
Post by: TYCOON on March 27, 2020, 03:52:01 pm
The government make the laws NOT the police.

The government have stated we can work so it is your choice.

All my customers were over the moon to see me and all have paid by BACS.

Get out in this good weather and do your job.

The police enforce the law they do not make them.

The law states WE CAN WORK no ifs or buts.

Just a quick food for thought i was so surprised last week i picked up 6 new customers (no contact)

Cleaning a big house and next door family sat in garden said can you do ours yes £20 paid by BACS now a regular customer.

A good opportunity to expand your business because some window cleaners have downed tools.

I took four days off this week as wasn't too sure what was right for me. Back at work again and I printed off the Covid19 information from the Gov.uk website and carry it in the van. This is just in case a police officer got shirty with me. Very unlikely but thought it was a good idea.

Out of interest, why is it you think your opinion is more important or relevant than Mr Gammons?
And before you say “all he does is have a go at people”, just remember you’ve just called him a “moron”.

I had today off, so I’ve decided to “bust everyones chops”.  ;D

I wouldn’t take on anyone who’s window cleaner had stopped due to the virus. I respect the decision of any window cleaner who decides not to work, I don’t see it as an opportunity to kick them in the gonads.

Take a deep breathe mate and just remember that anything you read on here wont (or rather ‘shouldn’t’) actually effect you.

Just like you would tell your kids...”just ignore him”.

Mr Gammon likes a good wind up, bite and he’ll sink his teeth in  ;D

I’ve changed the post. As I’ve said elsewhere, name calling isn’t helpful.

I still disagree with you, but we will see what happens in the long run I suppose.

I’ve been getting texts and have had 2 phone calls saying you are still coming aren’t you to which I’ve said yes of course I am I need to keep going, this week I’ve worked and of course been shopping I have had far far more chance catching anything shopping over working,I’ve kept my distance  if I’ve ever seen anyone although I’ve been yards away worn rubber gloves etc when working.

Right for me maybe isn't right for you.

Good luck everyone. I hope to see you all on the other side of this.

Very sorry to hear that. As I’ve said, I disagree with what you are doing but what do I actually know. What do any of us know. This situation is unheard of...in human history!

I wonder what we will all be doing in 6 months.

Stay safe and wear gloves when you get the cash  ;)

You’ll find out how loyal people are when you don’t work for months and come out of your shell and see that some customers have jumped ship to someone else, shoot me down if you like but one thing I’ve learnt is there is not as much loyalty as you think.
Ok you’ll have many people that will stick by you but there will still be many that will take another cleaner up on his offer if you hibernate for months
all the customers that have been supportive and have been happy that you’ve carried on are the ones that agree you should still be able to work,if you are sensible at the moment work in you’re own and come into contact with no one like I do on my work it’s fine.
Has anyone noticed that they haven’t said you must not go to work if you are a X for a job or X for this job, they’ve said key workers etc but they’ve not said only and that’s final it’s blurred lines.

A good opportunity to expand your business because some window cleaners have downed tools.
That's the spirit, all in this together or in it for yourself.?.....
..... Every cloud hey ?
Many are left with a moral dilemma of whether to work next week or sit it out frugally for the next two months and hope the government come good on a promise. You on the other hand see a business opportunity you utter MODDED

The thing is which ever way you look at it people see disasters as an opening in most cases, all is fair in love and war and all that.
Doesn’t matter what people say now when we all go back to work properly the last thing you will think of is someone else just you and you’re family, customers are no different at the moment they say yeah I understand blah blah blah when they’ve been looking out of dirty windows for 4 months and the guy across the street is cleaning what will they do,will the loyalty be there still. People have short memories you aren’t related to them and like any other service industry they can choose to use who they like, how stupid and fickle people are some might even say to you I thought you’d packed up the window cleaner that cleans over the road has been coming for months lol,the old general public never fail to surprise me.

You can’t say this might not happen in some cases it’s been all over the news the last couple of weeks and my phones full of texts and I’ve had calls from customers like please keep coming, what’s it going to be like in 2 months time when some are still out cleaning and they get seen by other guys customers it’s bound to happen.
How many window cleaners will say when they get asked to clean a new job oh no love he’s still cleaning windows he will be back lol,not many that I’ve come across dog eat dog in this world  especially the way the economy might go.

You could get it anywhere working out shopping etc more likely out shopping imo,if I can work I’m working I’m not spending what I’ve worked for to keep me at home if I’m what’s looking like allowed to work.
Who’s more at risk ask Boris me out working in a couple of hundred acres or 300 people packed into a toilet roll on the underground,I’ve got more chance in getting hay fever.

Given the current situation I couldn't knowingly do that to another window cleaner. Sure, if the customer isn't truthful then you've no way of knowing if they actually already had one. Yes no loyalty but if I was a customer I'd call my window cleaner. But perhaps that's just me going against the tide of  late capitalism.

On a serious note though I don’t agree with taking other window cleaners customers while their WC is self isolating, it’s bit below the belt, but I do think it will happen to be honest. In my case no matter what after all this is over I need to canvass like mad so if I lose some so be it.

From the Chief Constable Avon and Somerset police, https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/news/2020/03/chief-constable-and-pcc-issue-statements-urging-the-public-to-stay-at-home/

“Non-essential businesses have been told to close and we will work with local authorities to make sure this is respected.''

Window cleaning is non-essential. So that's that.

But where have the government said that non essential businesses have to close? This is what I find so annoying.

From the government website ,'' the Government has ordered certain businesses and venues to close.''  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others#going-to-work

''The   Government   has   also   identified   a   number   of    critical   workers whose children   can    still   go    to    school or
their   childcare   provider.   This   critical   worker   definition   does   not   affect   whether   or   not   you   can    travel    to
work - if   you   are   not   a   critical   worker,   you   may   still   travel   to   work   provided   you   cannot   work   from home.''

You can draw some similarities between smoking and the pandemic. The warnings are there plastered all over the ciggy packet, yet people carry on.
Some are addicted to cleaning windows, no doubt about that!

You can draw some similarities between smoking and the pandemic. The warnings are there plastered all over the ciggy packet, yet people carry on.
Some are addicted to cleaning windows, no doubt about that!

You stupid idiot.

We've worked hard this week and even done the extra challenges set by his teacher on Class Dojo.
There might be a change of career for me after all this. I might go back to primary school.

I think I'm too good to be a window cleaner, after all this virus stuff. There's more primary school kids staying home than window cleaners.
And I can work from home. Wanna play Fortnite?

I cleaned the windows of a customer on Wednesday, she works in the hospital neurology dept, she said they are currently altering the ward as they expect an influx of Covid-19 patients. She was actually self isolating as her daughter had shown symptoms and the whole family were to be tested on the Thursday. She had no problem with me cleaning her windows.....That said I would totally understand if her mind set changed a little if and when her ward becomes overcrowded with people suffering from the virus.

Yes, I have and  high up too. I asked him what he thought.

He has told me that in his personal opinion he thinks the government has made a plea (not a direction) to only work if it is essential.

He thinks I could work but doesn't think it would be viewed positively by the general public.
He added  it's possible that restrictions  will only get tighter in the days and weeks to come.

His wife is a house cleaning fanatic who would love me to clean her windows every week if I could fit it in to my schedule.

They haven't said I can't clean their windows when I asked.

But I know what they think.

I have several police officers as customers we have decided to shut down and not work I have spoken to one of them and the policy down hear is anyone who isn’t a key worker is told to go home ,we have read blocks every few miles , if ones argue they are going to be issued a fine and possible arrest , he said the direction from government is crystal clear stay home , the exception is for  key workers that need to travel to work not non essential jobs like window cleaning they should not be out , I had a friend stopped on Thursday afternoon and when he tried tk show them the gov web site the copper told him dint try and tell me the law , either gi hime or you will be fined , once you have been stoped you details and vehicle details are put into a data base if stoped again the fine is doubled up to £960  , Ime not saying this is right or wrong but it’s what is actually happening in the street . Another window cleaner was on a customers property cleaning there windows with the house holders consent and the police stoped him and sent him home saying if he is seen out again working instant fine .

i dont believe you...........we are perfectly entitled to work (alone) as long as we keep our distance from customers and follow a few basic hygiene rules and common sense(like refusing tea/coffee,insisting on cashless payments,etc)....

the risk is very small.........

The problem with that, Daz, is that the bobby might not give you the opportunity to apply common sense and socially distance, refuse tea and coffee etc. Why should he?
He might just nick you and ask questions later.
Is that anyway to work or run a business?

I dont appreciate being called a liar several others have posted very similar experiences, that’s what is happening down here not in Manchester , we decided not to work so it doesn’t affect us but that’s the way the police are enforcing it down here , the advice is at best ambitions as the police are saying the .gov site sais stay at home ,the bit about can go to work if you cannot work from home , they say applies to key workers only , and I can see there interpretation of that if you read it in context , several other police forces through the country have said the same thing

Have some of you never been to a football match? Or been involved in some public unrest?
They move you on, whack you or nick you and you debate the rights and wrongs after.
And they're usually viewed as being in the right. If you get arrested in the present social climate, you're not going to get much sympathy from the general public.
Choose your battles, fellahs.

I would never take work from another window cleaner.
I picked up new customers who had not had their windows cleaned for years.
What i was refering to that it was a good opportunity to get new business with nearly everyone being at home.
The roads i normally work are usually dead because everyone is at work.
With everyone  being home they were shouting over to me as they had never had a cleaner in years.

Well they'd have to drag me kicking & screaming to the local nick because I'm allowed to work under current guidelines.

You are very brave on a keyboard on some Internet forum but facing armed police get real you would be face down on the floor being arrested , they will not listen to what you have to say or look at anything you might have down loaded to show them , they interpret the law and enforce it not you or I
I think we will be stopped from working before armed police are deployed.

All the road blocks down hear have armed on them , and the army are on standby at a local base as well

Armed road blocks...?

In Cornwall..?!?!

Wow...

I crossed a couple of roads this evening even though 456 pedestrian deaths in the UK in 2018 were pedestrians.  I also drove a car this morning even though there were nearly 2000 deaths from road traffic accidents (not sure if that includes the drivers who killed 456 pedestrians).

If you want to further minimise the risk of dying or killing someone, never cross a road and never drive a vehicle.

However, given that we're a population of 67 million, the risk of you killing someone while driving, or being killed, is still extremely low.

Context is everything.

Just been on live chat with west midlands police. As far as they are concerned long as i follow government gudelines  its fine with them. But  check daily because things can change. A police officer booked in tomorrow given the option to cancel or have just the front done. Wants backs done as well. I am working until told to stop. But respect the decision if anyone shuts up shop.

I contacted Merseyside Police via twitter yesterday and received this reply.

Hi government guidelines state that non essential work must not be carried out John.

UPDATE

Today i contacted Merseyside Police on Twitter.

Message

Hi many thanks for your reply but your information is incorrect. I have just received a message from my MP Damien Moore who has stated i can go to work. Clarification was published this morning by the CABINET OFFICE stating i can go to work.
gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do

 SECTION 6 STATES

How can I find out if my work is essential or not?

The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work. I will be working as instructed by the cabinet office. Many thanks

Reply from Merseyside Police

Hi John, apologies for the incorrect advice my colleague has provided yesterday and glad to hear you are able to work and have had this enquiry clarified.

The police won't stop you because they're busy answering questions from window cleaners.
Some window cleaners don't ring the police because they have a mind of their own.
So do some police officers.

^^^ Well done, John, hopefully that will trigger some kind of information sharing to clarify it with the rest of the coppers in that area.

I'm sure they've got better things to be worrying about, like investigating internet non-hate crimes, than to be bothering hard-working tradesmen.

Which conflicts completely with Point 6

6. How can I find out if my work is essential or not?
The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work.

Separately, there is a list of critical workers who can still take their children to school or childcare. Provision has been prioritised for these workers.

Every worker – whether critical or not – should work from home if they can but may otherwise travel to work.

According to reports in the Guardian the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) and College of Policing are rushing through guidance reminding officers of the limits of their powers under the law - including that they are not entitled to tell people what is an essential purchase from a shop or stop them driving to a secluded location to exercise.

They deny that any new guidance is being issued, but Whitehall sources confirmed that forces are being reminded to show restraint and existing guidance is being recirculated.

That must be worth a smidgen of respect?
If I ignore the fibbing, as well?

Always the first to quote my posts; do you hang around waiting for me to post?

Seriously, this fixation with me isn't healthy for you, Griff.

Have you a man crush on me?

Fibber.
Someone beat me to it.
Don't you tell me what's healthy for me! If I want to have a crush on you I will.

Weird fixation? Don't be so self deprecating. It's a perfectly justified fixation.
I'm only having the craic, chief. I'm not a proper stalker, so if you do stay home, you will stay safe.
Promise.

Seeking my attention under the guise of a compassionate response is still seeking attention with  dash of dishonesty thrown in, Griff.

I'm only joshing, Toshing. I do go too far with my jokes, sometimes, I'll admit that.
Like when Rita lost it with Norris, put it down to Kabin fever.
If I'm back at it next week, I might go back to being my old affable self.
I've even missed myself.

Your old self is seeking my attention.

Your back posts are replete with it; you don't contribute; you rarely post other than to seek attention from me.

I'm living in your head; that's not good for you, especially if you're locked down.

You've a young child; get off the internet and go and seek some of his attention; he needs you.

Hurtful, you, Tosh.
But you've brutally shown me the errors of my ways and I can only thank you for that.
Tough love is still love.
