Which is the easiest to achieve?
I have a company that I do quite a lot of window cleaning for and they have insisted on one or the other.
I know it can be a bit long winded so I'm hoping for an easy option.

From my enquiries as long as you stump up a large amount of dosh you can have either virtually the net day

Hi Terry
I did CHAS last year for the same reason and unless you get lots of business from your customer, it can be a pain. Costs £300 + per year and really all it does is show you have Insurance, methods and processes in place. A lot of it wasn't relevant to me- employee training records etc. If you cleared some time, sat down you could do it in a day.

Jeez, I cant even remember what I did. It was Safecontractor not CHAS.

They are all a rip off. Get yourself up to date with HSE and tell anyone who asks you meet the requirements.
It doesn’t matter how many pretty badges you have on your van it’s down to basic common sense and complying with HSE

Safe contractor is about £180 plus vat if you have 5 or less employees. Usual docs are H & S policy, risk assessments, environmental policy, insurance document, a few other basic docs. You can find all these policies on the Health & Safety Executive Government site for free.

I spent years complying with all these different organisations to keep various contractors happy. As soon as you comply with one another one pops up. Then the big boys get their own companies in and say you have to pass all their criteria to work for them. In the end I decided It doesn’t matter how many you have from ISO 9001 down to CHAS, they are all after the same thing! Your MONEY!!!. Now I do the basics I write my own RAMS that comply with HSE, I am fully insured and if ya don’t like it get another company.

Then the big boys get their own companies in and say you have to pass all their criteria to work for them. Not sure what line of work you're in, but part of the appeal of an SSIP is that it basically stops you needing to fill out PQQ's for contractors any time you wish to tender.
I passed CHAS and i sent it away to our contractors and it must easily have saved me 2 or 3 weeks a year printing off the same poop with slight amendments to it.
one certificate and they accept you're good to go. For the price of £300 its not the worst

All well and good if they all accept CHAS but sadly not all do and as I said the bigger the organisation the harder it is. Try getting into some of the big companies with CHAS you have no chance. You certainly won't get ISO approved or many others for £300. The last one a certain department store got me to try and do was over £2K PA. As I said its horses for courses as far as I am concerned. I have a contractor now who has BESA, CHAS, ALCUMUS, PASMA, IPAF, SSIP and NAAD and he has just tendered and they want another different one ::)roll
