Title: Batteries only lasting 2-3 months!
Post by: mike1986 on November 11, 2019, 04:09:07 pm
For the last 2 years now I’m having to buy a new battery every few months. They start off great but then only last for around 5-6 hours a day. I’m changing the battery for around 7hrs the afternoon before with a good quality smart charger. I’m running 2 power-up reels and 2 pumps from the one battery. Any idea why this keeps happening?? It’s costing me a fortune. This is the last battery I bought on 20th September

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?storeId=10001&productId=1471219&categoryId=165762&langId=-1&catalogId=10151

I’ve never bought a Halfords one before and tried lots of different brands all around the £110-£120 mark.

Thanks very much

Sorry, I’ve posted the wrong link in the original post. It’s the leisure battery that I did actually buy. I’ve always bought leisure batteries but keep having the same issue

Try changing your charger. We use electric reels and twin pumps with no issues.

Thanks status check. This is the charger I use. Is this not good enough in your opinion?

that sounds really strange.  Might have a glitch somewhere thats continuously draining your battery.

Batteries should have a 5 year guarantee if its a battery problem.

Thanks
In the link a c tek mxs10 charger is advertised (more expensive). I have a c tek mxs5 and find it an excellent charger.

Tayna seem to rate the c tek charger as better.

Thanks

That's the same charger I have used for the past 12 years without issue. My leisure batteries have lasted around 3 years and this last one still in use is nearly 5 years old.

If you put a multimeter across the leisure battery terminals whilst the charger is on you should get a charge reading of 13.9v.

Other than that Its just a guess why your batteries aren't lasting.

IMO those with electric hose reels should be running a class B leisure battery that's suitable for 'wild camping',  motor mover use and show a CCA (cold cranking amps) value. This would be a combo starter and leisure battery. (They aren't perfect starter or perfect leisure batteries; they are a compromise between the two.)

If both electric reels are being used together you are asking your leisure battery to supply around 50 amps of current, albeit for around 30 seconds. A true leisure battery isn't designed to do that.

Batteries used by window cleaners don't have a warranty.  :'(   More and more of the battery suppliers are cottoning on to this.

See the end of the third paragraph under ' Wear and Tear and Deep Cycling'.

We have found with experience that keeping a battery above 75% charged works for us. The last van had a split charge relay and I benched charged that battery every second night in summer and each night in winter. If the battery had had a heavy day then it got charged that night, period.

Pull up to a caravan centre with window cleaner all over the side of your van and then try and take your batteries back,it’s not happening.
Not anywhere near enough time charging 7 hours

Are you fully charging as soon as you get home?

Yes as soon as I pull up on my drive I plug in the charger and leave on for around 7-8 hours

7 hours is not enough charging time

Really? I have a digital display on the charge that shows when it’s fully charged and always make sure it is. To be honest this has only ever been an issue since using the power up reels so I’m guessing as spruce suggested I’m using the wrong type of leisure battery for this.

My battery lasted about 2 years with that same setup. 2 man system from waterworks.

That was used primarily as a one man system though.

I had battery problems recently, so I opted for way more capacity than I need. Ive now got 340 amps of power in 2 large batteries.

Will See how long these last. My thinking is that I’m only depleting the batteries a small amount, and that way there not put under lots of pressure. We will see.

Use two batteries in parallel, they’ll last more than twice as long.

sounds like you may need 2 batteries in tandem instead of one,id also upgrade to a 20amp numax charger and charge up overnight every night.......it could be your taking too much out of a single battery during your working day thus knackering it within a few months......

It's probably to do with the leccy reels.

I use two leccy reels and two pumps and battery's last about a year, I use the halfords ones as well.

3 months is a bit poor mind!

I used to have the same issue. There was a line of batteries in my garden and it was about 12 ft long. And they were all leisiure batteries.

Here is my previous posting from a few months back:

"This is the deep cycle battery that works for me.

https://www.batterycharged.co.uk/shop/brands/crown-batteries/crown-31dc130-12v-130ah-deep-1243243.html

I've tried using normal leisure batts, but they aren't up to the job if you have a 9Kw webasto diesel heater.

Tayna were £365 including delivery, but you can get them from "Mitchell" at Battery Charged for £315.

His number is 01279 652067

And no, I'm not on commission!"

it maybe that you are asking too much from 1 battery

I have 2 leisure batteries, one is for 2 pumps and the other one is for 1 electric reel (the other reel is manual)

I have never run out of power and only charge them both up every 3 days over night

I would suggest to you 2 batteries, 1 for the pumps and the other for the reels
