Title: WFP waste water - a solution ?
Post by: Sarah Sarill on August 09, 2005, 08:08:18 pm
As you are are aware I started making my own water 2 weeks ago and never want to look back.  HOWEVER, despite sourcing and purchasing one of the lowest systems for waste  I am concerned that its gonna be really expensive to run when we go onto a water meter.

Is there any technical reason why the waste pipes cannot be re-routed back into the inflow hose pipe on a continuous loop ?

What effects would this have on the TDS reading (it should be lower !!)  I am sure that you experienced water makers have already discussed this and have come up with a technical reason why this cannot be done but for all our benefits (and that of potential water shortages in the future) it may be worth looking at again.

ARE THERE ANY SYSTEM RETAILERS OR MANUFACTURERS ON THIS SITE WHO COULD ADVISE ON WHAT TYPE OF JOINT WOULD YOU NEED TO MAKE THE CONNECTION ETC ?

WOULDNT you be putting a more consentrated inpure water through your ro? asking it to do twice as much work but putting the cost of water to new filters in
+ the cost of a membrane you may be justified with water costs.
dont quote me on this though

I'm confused

when you guys mention waste water where exactly does the waste come from i was under the impression pure water was pumped from your tank through hoses onto the window then falling to the ground?

It's waste that comes from the RO unit, it needs some to keep the membrane clean.

Hi sarill

Have a read at this http://www.ro-man.com/ro-facts.html it explains the process of RO filtration.

The nearest I come to a meter is the gas and the length of my hose

take a TDS reading of your waste water and you will never put it through your system or into your fish pond.
The waste water is from when you are purifying your tap water and is WASTE.
All the impurities have to go somewhere.

Steve is right, the TDS reading of the waste water is vastly higher than the the original source water, all you will do is overload and wear out your membranes and  resin far quicker than you should. And if try to route the waste through the membranes on a continuous loop the waste water will continue to become so contanimated you will ruin your membranes in very short order.
You can get an R/O that will work at a ratio of 1:1 and remove all bar the tiniest amount of Disolved solids, but that will cost you over £400.
You could always but a flow restricter in the waste pipe, I'm not sure what will happen to your membranes if you force them to work at a different ratio of pure to waste than they were designed forthough :o

Ian

ITS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE BEING ON A METER AND A BUSINESS TARRIF.

£150.00 PER 6 MONTHS  FOR STANDING CHARGE THEN 0.87 FOR WATER PER MTR THEN ROUGHLY THE SAME FOR WASTE.

700 LTR PER DAY INCLUDING WASTE = 0.87 X 2=1.74 X 5=8.70 PER WEEK. 34.80 PER MONTH X 6 MONTHS =208.80 ADD YOR STANDING CHARGE 150.00 ADD WATSE SAY 100.00= 458.80 GIVE OR TAKE NOW THIS IS OVER 6 MONTHS AND IF YOU CAN TURN OVER 200 PER DAY THEN IT MORE THAN MAKES UP FOR WHAT YOU WASTE IN WATER SO JUST PUT IT DOWN THE DRAIN
