Hi everyone
Looking for ideas here a friend of mine bought a new carpet last year fitted week before xmas virtually straight away an area aprox 14" dia in front of a sofa went dark ,in front of a seat that isn't used regularly, doesn't look like shading no defined line around the area and rest of carpet looks as new.
Any ideas please

Possibly sweaty feet or dye out of socks, or both.

Agree with the above posts and also maybe slippers as the sole might have disitergrated n transfered on the carpet..

New underlay or laid on top of old? If old poss something comming through. Could be a spillage they've not told you about. Try micro-splitter or equivalent to see if there's any transfer.

How often have you found a similar scenario with " dark areas " but no one in the house accepting responsibility when a little digging usually reveals " possibilities " the most common being a small spill which was dealt with by using Vanish or similar.
Problem is...............it was originally a tiny spot but by the time Vanish has been added and scrubbed the area has increased massively but only shows a few weeks later when the soil attracting Vanish, or whatever turns into a big dark patch.
It could of course be something else but that's where I'd start.

Spot on IMO ;D Tell him to mist some water over it and see if it foams up.........busted.

Eddie do you know if the carpet was treated with a protector? It could be faulty application of protector at the carpet retailer's warehouse - a lot of them pre-cut the carpet off the roll into the approximate room sizes, lay them out on the floor and treat them the night before. Then they roll them up, take them to the job and fit. There could have been something happen at this stage.
Sometimes where the hose joins the pressure sprayer it starts to leak doesn't it, I think we've all picked our sprayer up at some point and found it sitting in a puddle!
One retailer I do protection for has a leaky warehouse roof - if it's forecast rain they have to chalk-mark the floor and not put any carpet under where the drips are going to land!!
