Title: Opinions on website please
Post by: sunshine windows on April 16, 2010, 10:48:08 pm
Hi all,

I've had my website modernised after my brother had done the initial set up for me. Fair play to him for doing it but it looked like a pikey site (hoping this one doesn't get too many snide remarks)

It's not the finished article yet because I want to add a picture banner underneath the tabline on the home page and insert a lot more before and after pics.

More testimonials to come also and some changes to the wording on the homepage. The designer basically copied what my brother had put it text on the original site.

SO! Although a few changes need to be made what are your initial thoughts and is there anything else you can suggest adding to the site.

Thanks in advance for your advice (I hope)

Search engine optimisation. There's no point having a website that will hurt potential customers eyes if none of them can find it,.... ;)

its a bit windows 98 if you know what I mean.

All the font is in the same sanserif, I know its good to have unity but its nice when the unity is attractive to look at. You could use bold and italic on thing like phone numbers etc etc.

Pics pics pics. I know you want to put a flash pic slide show in there but a few normal photos would do wonders for the block of text that aspires on each page.

I would look around at other sites and mimic (copy) there ideas I'm guessing the ones you like the look and feel of wont be like yours much.

I'm not slating it I'm just giving you my opinion. My window cleaning site is pants I know. It needs loads of work I know I neglected it for ages because I have other sites I needed to work on and lost love for it.

YOurs has the making for a great site once you 'Jazz' it up a bit

Oh and get a guid to SEO and apply it to the site otherwise its not working for you.

I like it, well done.
When I had my website built I typed in Google - web design - and the company I chose came out on top - organically - web creation is their name, and they charged me under a grand for my website www.purple-rhino.co.uk - hopefully mine will start to show higher on google soon!
To me its not about getting a cheap website built by a friend, there are professional companies out there, literally hundreds of them, and if you want things done in the best possible way, it makes sense to speak to them. 8)

i guess under one grand means a few hundred quid ?? ? ? ?

so your choice was based on the company who came top in google NOT on recomendations

if you are going to spend money on a site, ask around, get a recomendation, on the people you will deal with, the qaulity of work done etc etc

Thanks for the opinions guys.

The site went live as a rushed job because I would rather this one than the old page I was using, hence the reason it's nowhere near the finished article at the minute.

I've spoken to the company regarding SEO and getting it updated asap. It came as part and parcel of the website but seems to have been neglected.

I completely get what your saying about the amount of bright white on each page. I was thinking of maybe a background pic for each page but am worried the text might not show through well enough. Also I agree with the font and size, it's just boring to look at and read.

Keep it coming Lads and lasses,
Lance

I would remove that background as it does your head in, and use your domain names email address instead of a hotmail one.

I would keep the white space on the site it keeps it clean and fresh looking.

Seo as said needs looking at, font size also needs looking at.

if you do take away the background I think the header/logo image is going to need a little attention to bled in with the site rather than looking like it has just been stuck there.

few tweeks and your away  :)

seems ok to me.....maybe change your email address from a personal hotmail account to a business email...something like info@sunshinewindows.co.uk

The email is going to change to lance@sunshinewindowcleaning.co.uk and will be set up next week.

I was unsure about the background from the start and may have it removed. It doesn't show that much of it on my pc but on some screens it is very large and in your face.

Cheers,
Lance

Just under a grand means just under a grand, I wish it could have been cheaper. Over the years I have had different ideas about websites, this is just my way of doing it now. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't who knows. :P

I think it's pretty good. Get the testamonials in there and you can't go wrong. Key words etc so you get top on Google and all that. Nice one  8)

That'll be 15 quid please. ;D

Under "technology" you state that the windows are left "sterile" This is not true. ;)

I would change the header and the background if it was my website plus some bits of text here and there but overall a good site.

Ivesons, why would you change BOTH the background and the header.

The reason I have the amount of yellow in the website is that I have 2 Yellow Fiat Doblo's and wanted to create a recognisable company image.

Lance

I find the yellow sun burst background is in your face and don't think it would look right if you only remove the background if you want to create a company image why not have your company logo and a picture of both of you vans up their

How do you check what Meta doobery thingies are listed for your web page.

Been informed that they've now been put in place and just wanted to check what's being used. (sorry i'm a complete technophobe).

They've added some tags, but they're not the best,.. Swindon is mentioned loads, but none of the smaller towns & villages that you probably cover.  Your page titles still don't contain any keywords either.

Hi Nathanael,

Can you explain just how this works to me please.

What do you mean by page titles? The tabs for each page selection??

Any chance you could list what would be a good set of tags for me so I can go back to the company and tell them exactly what should be put in the tags.

I thought the guy new what he was doing but obviously not.  ???

Thanks for the input
Lance
