Title: Ash Cloud
Post by: Jack Wallace on April 15, 2010, 07:41:17 am
Be prepard for some possible fallout, I have had problems in the past with dust and sand in the air so I guess this could be the same, Although on a positive side, if its bad enough it could generate some new work.   ;)

Not at the height that it's moving at, it's highly unlikely that it'll settle on any part of the uk

By the way brainstrains...it's upwards of 30,000ft in the sky...and not even over Britain. At least not around here anyway.

Because planes fly up to 30,000ft and it's hovering in the air around Britain, so they can't take the risk.

'scuse me for asking, but why couldn't the planes fly at a lower altitude?

Oh and can those turboprop "Hercules" jobbies fly? I know they're propellor driven but I think it's jet engine technology that the propellors are connected to.

They can but it cost's a fortune and uses oodles more fuel in the thicker air, they would go empty before getting there. Local may be fine but medium and long haul would be a no no.

I saw a turboprop today. Civilian aircraft too... Don't know where from. Staverton, Gloucester I expect.

The way this is going my holiday may be cancelled.   :'(

The ash cloud is all over the UK!
As the cloud moves south it is actually descending, so even light aircraft will be grounded soon.

Yes it has small glass particles which you cant see - Im wondering wether to ware a mask to work I will look like a dick but better than getting health problems - I have been outside working on my van all day today and yesterday and my throat is really dry chest feels wheasy? Most of us guys have no choice but to work outdoors and we cant really stop, anyway back to the mask?

It isn't glass thats in there, volcanic ash is a lot more abrassive than normal ash/dust, this is because the ash particles have very sharp edges where as dust and other ash have rounded and smooth edges. also volcanic ash can hold more water than other forms of ash and dust.
Be careful if you clean your car/van in the next few weeks as you could really damage the paintwork.

ooohh!! i dont know how we will survive ::)

bloody hell they have volcanos going off
in iceland all the time being directly on a
fault line and manage to get on okay.

we have a bit of dust floating our way and
everythings coming to an end. ::) ::)

we breed a right bunch of fannies in this
country these days.

i would be more worried about dust if through
it bullets were coming at me and i couldnt see
mines and was getting hit by roadside bombs
like our soldiers are.

talk about whinging about a minor bit of discomfort

Light layer over Canterbury.  Cars that have been parked outside in the damp look a right mess.  You can see it clearly on white sills.  Looks really black when the water runs down onto it.  Doesn't appear to be sticking to the glass so far.

Totally agree mate, its really dusty lately, I thought the same when doing sky lights today and custy asked me to do her glass conny roof, and it all seems to be on the North side of the house so assuming it is from the ash....

Yeah, I've found most roofs today to be very dusty, with BROWN dust! Like you usually get! Not grey and carbon-like...
