hi could you advise me on a good package for about £1000-£1500 all set up, it seems portable is the only option at this price range. any help would be really appreciated.

Seems to be a lot of shyness out there Karl......what would help in your situation, is to let the board know where you're located and what you're hoping to do.
We're an opinionated lot, some from experience, some from brand, or providor loyalty, some due to financial outlay, some........just think they know better !
My personal opinion, is, don't get caught up in all the hype.
As you don't know whether you will be suitable for this occupation and many are not, but do it anyway, look around for a secondhand machine which will give you the opportunity to learn and practice.
You would save a lot of wasted time and money if you attend a one day introductory course. There are several of these on offer around the country and go for the nearest to home.
You will even find divided opinions on which secondhand machine is capable, or otherwise of doing a reasonable job, but you won't be an overnight expert and a simple portable, with as little as 70 psi and single vac will allow you to experiment and practice.
Ideally, you should have a carpet wand and upholstery tool with the machine and a powder detergent will be adequate for most jobs.
Some will suggest the above is nonesense and you must have massive power and the latest technology to succeed and be credible, but ......
I disagree and suggest you spend a little time learning.

oh sorry for the brief info, i currently run a small contract cleaning business in berkshire that is currently passing on the carpet cleaning to a colleage with no reward, seems i'm handing someone lots of nice earners. 95% of the carpet cleaning does not have to be of the best standard due to the type of properties being cleaned. all i really need to know is what machine , where and how much. i will obviously attend the neccesary training courses etc. no need for marketing business plans etc as i am already set up with customers waiting. thanks in advance

You state 'Cleaning does NOT have to be of the BESt Standard' surly this is the wrong attitude to look at going into Carpet Cleaning !!

I would suggest you wait and save up some more money, if you want to enter the trade as a professional your current budget would take care of some good training and enable you to aquire a very basic set up or a well used second hand model. It would leave little or nothing for marketting and promotion and would soon need replacing,

it seems some of you have the wrong end of the stick, i'm not short on money and the work is waiting for me. i am only putting this restricted budget on the machine because it is not going to be the main thing i do, just a good little earner. i realise for some of you carpet cleaning is your life and i respect that but all i want is a reasonable machine for a reasonable job at a reasonable price....call me reasonable but im only interested in paying a small amount of money because i only intend to do a small amount of carpet cleaning....

Yes, I suppose that makes sense if you are only cleaning an few carpets from time to time. Something like a good secondhand Extracta would be ideal.

where do i find these 2nd hand machines apart from ebay, does anyone deal in ex demo or quality 2nd hand stock? i am in the south east and will travel. thanks for your help

Most of the better suppliers should have second hand or ex demo machines from time to time, Extracta, Alltec, Solutions etc.

Get a twin vac with at least a 135 pump.
Alltec, Ashbys, Prochem, Extracta. etc.
A good secondhand machine could be obtained but you would have to eventually rebuild.
A wellknown moderator on another site apprantley aquired his collection of machines this way for many years.
