Post by: eco freindly. peoples champion ron .sherlock on July 23, 2005, 07:27:48 pm
tufted carpet repair burn tried tested works. tools ice pick.sharp scissors.carpet knife.hot melt gun. or liquid latex.seperate the rows of tuft into a square is best.using stanley knife cut through the rows of tuft but dont cut the backing. cut rows all round burn pull the tufts on the burn side of the cut seperate it.you can then lift it off.if there spares carpet  repeat proc ess and replace using hot melt gun . finding spare carpet if they have no bits often people have after carprt laying they usually have a rug or something offcut. then go to corner of room and see how much stretch there is and cut from there small bits please then reset carpet double side tape . there you are unless you have a better way thanks so much. ron

I think any carpet cleaner interested in this should go on a Carpet Repair Course

and certainly practice practice on rough cuts before trying this.

In a 30 years I must have taught thousands the art of carpet restoration, but unless you are very very good the skills can only be an add-on to your main line of work , the one good thing about the majority of  burns is that some componant of a carpet will be synthetic and the heat will have melted and slightly fused the fibres inside the burn area, so its not deteriorating, but what happens if the carpet is 10 years old? if the burn is fused solid to the backing scrim? there is no spare carpet? what if it is not a burn? would you still be able to say to the customer with confidence "WHEN IT IS FINISHED THE REPAIR WILL BE BOTH PERMINANT AND INVISABLE".

ive allways pulled the burnt tufts out and then sewed new ones in their place? no need for cokkie cutters etc ??? you can get the tufts from the edges, sew them in place of the ones youve taken out and then inject a latex solution from a syeringe to keep them in place, the needle to use is a semi circle one which is used for sewing up stomachs etc!! this works on tuffted carpets and wovens  bonded and looped carpets would require a days training course so if anyone is interested................ ;)

Ron.
There are probebly over 20 differant  types of carpet construction, there are definitly over 20 differant problems that would nessitate repair, and in the art of restoration there are well over 20 differant procedures that could be concidered, but for a craftsman, time is only relivant if you are trying to be economical and if you are conscientous you carry on until you get it right.

for an Axminster with the burn the size of a 50p it would take me 1hour,
for a heavy oz tufted could take longer but all depends on expierence, ive been doing them for 10yrs now.
