Title: Stinky car carpet
Post by: Computercleaner on July 15, 2005, 10:14:39 pm
Hello all

Usually only visit the general cleaning section of this forum because of the nature of my business.  However, this problem is nothing to do with my business and is more of a personal one.

I few weeks ago I put a lidded cup in the back of my car for my 3 year old full of milk - unfortunately it spilt and the milk went over part of the carpeting in the boot of my estate car.  I was very busy at the time at left it for a couple of days before I had time to clean it up properly - by this time it had become very stinky.  I used the usual disinfectants and household cleaners and thought that would be it.  The next day the smell was even worse, had to wait for a couple of days after this till the weekend and scrubbed the carpet with fairy liquid and then sprayed fabreeze on it - I thought I'd cracked it.  But the situation I think is compounded by this very hot weather and it started to not only smell of gone off milk but urine!!  don't ask why - so took off the carpet and realised that the milk had penetrated under the carpet and onto the casing so took the carpet out and as it was a very hot day scrubbed it thoroughly with washing powder and bicarbonate of soda (one of my old Mums old wives tales) - left it to dry which did not take long last weekend as it was so hot and put it back in the car.  The car now smell pultrid to say the least.  Even my 3 year old who has never mentioned noticing any smells before noticed this - even when there has been obvious horrible odours usually dropped by my 11 year old prevously she has seemed completely oblivious.  She was so overwhelmed that it made her sick - thankfully not my car or this would have just added to it.  Anyway my husband's boss suggested lemon - so spread a couple of lemons over the area and even left them standing upright to absorbe the odour - still not worked.  Please, please has anyone out there got any idea how the hell I am going to neutralise the smell.  Sorry to go on - but I spend at least 4 hours a day in my car and it is driving me mad.

Any help most appreciated.

Micro Clean by Bio Productions is the answer.  It is a bacteria which will eat away the smell BUT if you have used anti bacterial treatments or maybe disinfectants this will work against Micro Clean.  You will have to completely remove everything you have used on the spillage by rinsing thoroughly then simply soak the affected area with Micro Clean and leave for a few hours in a warm temperature.  The product has quite a strong perfume which will linger for a while, but it's better than sour milk!

Good Luck

Nobby

Oli,

A biological washing powder, preferably 'coloureds' will do the trick but you will need to let soak so that the enzymes can break the protein bonds.

It is probable that the other smells are because you have soaked the carpet and a bactericide will be required.
Prochems Clensan is quite effective

The urine smell may be a degradation product of the adhesive used to stick the carpet.

It is very important to extract well preferably finishing with a clean water rinse.

Hope this helps,

Doug

Thanks Goron I have just looked at your post on Solubac - sounds good - do you know where I can get some - looked on the web and appears to be French.

Thanks

Thanks - I will ring them tomorrow - bought some cheap bio washing powder in the meantime but will try both - it is now starting to smell a bit doggy.  If anyone has shampooed their dog with a nice smelling dog shampoo they'll know the smell I mean.  If this doesn't work I will go down the scrap yard and see if I can get another carpet.  Milk has been banned from the car - along with McDonalds happy meals.

Thanks again
Oli
