I have been running 6 years now and have only bought a hot box this year. Most jobs can be done cold especially if your just starting. A bare boiler can be bought from as low as £600, I got mine from Brayton Engineering for £1200 all in delivered.  A bare boiler needs to be controlled and protected by a relief v/v, you'll need a fuel tank and a trolley if its not being bolted directly into a van. Most boilers are Lavor and are rated at 200 bar (3000psi) @ 15 or 21 ltr/min so if your m/c is rated over this you just have to knock the unloader and /or revs back a bit, to get the temperature right up you would do this anyway. The increased cost over the bare boiler just results in the trolley, tank, cover and the control gear etc that each machine comes with. Do you really need to spend this money at first ?

cheers bdcs

no i don't need it to start off with but if and when i do i'd like to know so i'm ready, at the moment i'm looking at bowser trailers and therefore need extra room for the washer reels and other bits, soo if i can get one with a bit of room for a hotbox then thats a bonus. its just forward thinking which is how i like to do things, allthough it doesn't always work as you plan it :)

thanks for reply, theres not much info on them that i can find, are they diesel or electric, malcleanse does them but its confusing for a newbie as to wether there electric or diesel, if there diesel, whats the 4 meter cable for?

Heres a picture of a bare unit

The unit needs a small 240v supply which I use a 1kv suitcase other than thats its self contained.

Derek
Why can't you use your truckmount for hot water?
Title: Re: hot box
Post by: derek west on March 22, 2010, 06:02:46 pm
maximum heat is only achievable at 400 to 600 psi, all down hill from there brian, my tm is only mid range and the low end of mid range at that. truckmount is purely for indoor work.

When you are ready for the said hotbox give me a shout. Picked a brand new one up, with housing and on four wheels, 15lpm @ 3000psi for 750 inclusive.

My local supplier, they do my servicing and any parts or accessories I need. I don't know if that was a price for me (I do use them a lot) or whether it would be say another 100 for a one off, but even at 850 still cheap!!!

Derek, its a Portotecnica Stainless Steel Burner Unit M40-V. It comes with fuel pump, pump solenoid valve, starting transformer, heating coil and all cables. All it needs is a frame to sit in. List price £916.40 + vat.
Yours for £450 + vat free delivery. I bought this when I was going to do some tile and grout work but never got round to it.

Mike, its yours if you pay the carriage or collect it. It will have to be on a half pallet because of the weight, probably around 40 quid.
£350 + carriage and vat.

Sorry only had the one which I was going to rig up myself but changed track. Think they will run off a 12 volt inverter or genny.

Mine runs from a 80 quid 850 watt 2 stroke genny. I could have run it from the 1000watt inverter but was concerned about flattening the leisure batteries.

gonna sound thick now cos i'm not following this but.....

they run on diesel or petrol but need electric, again, could someone explain like there talking to a 10 year old how this is?????????????????????????????????????????
Title: Re: hot box
Post by: Mike Halliday on March 24, 2010, 09:41:25 pm
the diesel burns but like all things needs a source of oxygen, a hot box has  an electric fan to blow air into the  combustion chamber,  also the diesel is ignited with an electric arc across two pionts which also need electric.

Thats fine - I have a Stephill which is a Honda engined inverter type generator which was about £100 less than the whole Honda unit.

thanks bdcs.  the suitcase units are expensive like but they are smaller so you have more room in van.

Could i convert my m/c to run on hydrogen to cut down on fumes - I really suffer and nobody seems to love me - kind regards Orville - or am I sprout ? young, green and nobody likes me either, oh this is all getting out of hand  :'( :'(

Just been approached for a big pressure washing job on the exterior of a country mansion, they've already been quoted £15K for the job and are wondering if we can do it any cheaper.

The quote they have had is for hot pressure washing the exterior to kill off any future algae growth in the stone?

We've got a 4000psi Honda GX390 pressure wash (cold) how do I convert it to hot?  Do I just need to put a hotbox in line?

Yes

With the small genny as power for the hotbox.

It might be an idea to spray something like an algae inhibitor (Tensid) on afterwards to offer a little more!

Most hot boxes only up to 200 bar @ 15 or 21 ltrs/min and over this pressure are expensive. You can either knock the revs back a bit or change to a larger nozzle and bach the unloader off. It has been well established that you do need a small generator to power the hot box as per M ;D

Are we absolutely 100% confident that this is the way to power a hotbox because I am having some doubts, who am I, where am I, help, help ;D

Genny is no problem as we have a massive 6KVA one that is more than man enough for just about any job.

Just quoted him £12K including the hire of a cherry picker for a week, waiting for him to get back to me.

By the way I got referred this job through the BNI.  Well worth joining just for this.
