always cracks me up to see 3 or 4 so called wcs out working every day now the suns out!
drive past in your sign written van with all your kit and get the usual stroppy look back as i beep the horn and wave.
why does everyone think they are a wc when the suns out?
be glad when/if wfp was the only legal method - would wipe out most of the cowboys on push bikes with an old tea towel they prob took from mummys
-
I seen one lad out today with a few tea towels hanging for his belt
-
i saw a bloke out 2day, he was using wot looked like the old pub beer towles ::) its prats like that
that gives this business a bad name >:( so wanna put a few swear words in *********** *******
******* ********* ******** that will just ave 2do :-\
-
Nothing wrong with beer towels, they make great sill cloths we have been using them for 20 years and we are no cowboy outfit
-
I am going to look a bit like this to start with, in my car with ladders on top. :'(
I have top quality gear though, & proper cloths. :)
I would use WFP, but can`t purify the water myself at the moment, so that is out of the question.

Perhaps he was a chef.
Was he up a ladder? Or did you spot him in a kitchen?

They may have looked like "old pub beer towles", but how do you not know that on closer inspection, that they may have been professionally embroidered towels with their company logo. ;D

Beer towels are also excellent for guttering and Upvc work.

if he gets the windows clean it doesnt matter what he uses, my defination of a cowboy is someone who doesnt make a good job or deliberately misses windows i think there are a few window cleaning snobs on here

Hi,
No problem with working from car, the majority of window cleaners do. When you see them sign written they stand out a mile compared to a sign written van. I saw one today at Claygate, Surrey. It looked the biss.
Instead of beer towels I use cut-up bath towels from charity shops, there great for sills & spills.

They maybe great sill cloths but its the image that they project that is the problem.

what get me is all us window cleaners work all winter to get a living and then the dole cheats come out and take lots of our work by doing houses for 5 and 6 pounds makes me mad ,,
we need to do the same as scotland where you cant work inless you have a Licence

So there are no cowboy WFPers then?? Plenty who use plain old tap water!! I'm Just off to order some top of the range scrims now to wipe down my mucky sills.

Martin, you say that it cracks you up when you see these 3 or 4 fellas out, & the stroppy look that they give you when you beep your horn & wave from your sign written van, but it actually sounds as if you are quite bitter about it at the end of your post!
You said be glad when/if wfp was the only legal method - would wipe out most of the cowboys on push bikes with an old tea towel they prob took from mummys, but it just seems funny thing to say, because surely that would see a lot of proffesional trad fellas at a loss as well?
I intend to give 100%, & build a good reputation doing trad, but if I saw cowboy WFP`s, I don`t think I would want to see it banned on purely this reason, but if it was losing me work, then I might feel a bit different.

I think his bottom lip was wobbling when he made that statement. He seemed very upset!!

i work out of my vectra estate, its very tidy an clean, door magnets on the side, i use a freedom trolley and use 22ft slx an 35ft slx, so gear is fairly top notch, i wear full sign written work wear, i also have a website.
so just because i ain't got a big shinny van, does it makes me any less of a professional,
NO it doesn't , its just some people have the wrong attitude,
then you have the seasonal shiner only appears when weather is good, old knackered car, no uniform, an in the pub by one,
just because i use my car don't make me like them.
-

SPOT ON I USE THEM MYSELF GOOD BIT OF KIT

If you have a good sound customer base then you have nothing to worry about. If you provide a high quality service at a fair price then you have nothing to worry about.
Unprofessional window cleaners who do a bad job will never keep customers who want a regular and reliable window cleaner.
At the end of the day the CUSTOMER decides what they want and how much they can afford to pay.
In fact I welcome these unprofessional types, they make us look even better. Most of the people who use poor quality low priced window cleaners we would not want as customers.

There is that expression, 'If you lend a friend a tenner and he doesn't come back, it's probably worth it'
In a way it's the same with customers. If they stop using you for a group of dodgy looking blokes, in baseball caps, who are charging so little they must be signing on, then it probably does you a favour. Because they clearly can't be relied on.
One of my custies was canvassed 4 times in a space of 3 weeks, and said 'No' to all of them!
I do a good job so I don't lose customers on price, and I'm not cheap
-

s.w.c how much did u pay 4all that? if u dont mind me asking
i think jacket was 50 notes, fleece 30 notes, t-shirts 13notes each, bodywarmer 20 notes. vest tops 10 notes each, high viz vest 10 notes.
but its worth every penny.
-
thanks s.w.c ;) they seem good prices :) gonna look in 2that ;D thanks again m8 ;)

are we being a touch judgemental here
isnt this alot like the " professional WFP users " looking down at the people who use a trolley system etc etc
lets live and let live
if you clean with a old pair of skiddy Y front or a ironics thermobore system, it doesnt matter, you just clean windows, if they are clean, you have done your job, get paid and move on
-
joe you should have put mr blobby on it for him.lol
-
heres my experience, and reason why i now always wear sign writen uniform, i have had the police called on me at least 6 times by nosey nebours, by wearing a t-shirt ect with large text, they know who you are, plus it looks very professional
-
Even when I was trad I'd never use beer towels.
I don't care what anyone says, it doesn't project an professional image.
There's just no need for it. Good sized microfibres, ie unger ones, are fine and made for job.
I wouldn't turn up with my sign written van, embroidered workwear etc and then have a skanky beer towel hanging out my pocket.
Just my personal opinion.
-

I personally use wfp as my method as that's my preference yes have a sign written van.but a trad guy wit his ladders and car can and a lot are just as good and probably are better in some instances.what looks bad is when you have 3 or 4 hooded top young lads desending on a customers house to clean the windows.and I think a lot of guys who use wfp would love to see a ban on using ladders just because there would b a lot of people having to pack in.however if you look on ebay or even sites like this the equipment is cheap as chips under a grand and you got yourself set up so shouldn't that tell us not to look down on trad shiners just strive to b the best you can in your own little world.and also don't get to big headed cause you got a 500 pound pole and the other guy is using a 5 quid scrim.some might even say the trad guy has his head screwed on better as his business earns same as yours but cost and continues to cost him less to run than any wfp .

NO guy working Trad will be just as quick as WFP!
one of the reasons I went to WFP is the fact I can earn more per day than using ladders.
I am not slow with a mop and blade either. its just a fact as you havent got to move ladders around and run up them every other window.
The only way we can stop the cowboys and benefit cheats in this industry is if we had a license scheme run nationally NOT BY LOCAL COUNCILS.
I feel the fee should be around £300 per year for the licence too.
CORGI registered engineers pay a damn sight more than that.
If Window cleaners moan about the fee then they are tight as a ducks backside!
Sorry for the waffle but this is my view on the subject of cowboys and benefit cheats!

Hi Matt,
Ask the lads in Scotland if they think the licence works. I don't think it does and like all taxes/laws are generally enforced on the people who are honest/ law abiding. The summer crowds or dolies are seen to have nothing so there is no point in prosecuting them.
Just my thoughts and sorry for off topic
Lee
-
Lee the probl;em the guys have in Scotland is its run through the local council, some guys have to pay for several licenses, which is nonsense, if it was thought out properly and done on a national basis then I think it would work well.

I hate seein the cowboys going round my area in there clapped out old fiestas and other piles of poo. Usually have a buckled set of knackered ladders on top and a round bucket in the foot well.
I grew up on a council eatate with next to nothing and still managed at 17 to buy a 2 year old astra van and start my own window cleaning round. This was with no help from anyone, while still providing for my son and my girlfriend. I have never claimed on the dole or even set foot in a job centre. If i managed this i just dont understand why any other so called shiner cant!
-
If they stop using you for a group of dodgy looking blokes, in baseball caps,
i wear a baseball cap, start off every easter with a new dark blue one and by september it is bleached nearly white,as im thinning on top and dont want sunstroke what do you suggest i wear on my head ,a hankie or perhaps a top hat ;D

Do you find you get any funny comments from custies about wearing a cap? Im currently recovering from a fractured skull and have found the sun makes my head hurt along the fracture line. just dont want to put any potential new custys off

no comments at all ,wollie bob in winter and giants baseball in summer,if i dont cover up the sun makes me ill

i can understand why wearing a hat whilst canversing might look dodgy, but whilst working, as long as ur not in ur footy top, ie clean pants and a t shirt or coat, i think u can look proffessional, i always where a black wooly hat and no one as every said any thing to me
-
Sign written van, uniforms, logo's excellent
100% trust from your customers, priceless.
One of my old dears gave me a shawl and hat for our new baby yesterday, crocheted by her own fair hand. Bless her.
Another one gave my Mrs £20 for the baby, and a guy gave me a fiver to stick in the babies hand for luck.
I just wish someone could give me a good nights sleep at the moment.

You're right, I'm wrong. Nothing wrong with baseball caps.
You know the type of look I mean though don't you. Caps and hoodies, lots of burberry, stubbing out their fAgs on the customers drive, usually there is a gang of them.
Though the idea of a top hat could be an interesting gimmick, would keep falling off tho. ;D

I commend you for your success. However, is it fair to judge others as a cowboy simply because their chosen mode of transport differs from yours? I drive an old Fiesta van, but I have an excellent clientele who employ me to do a good job for them, not to drive a shiny new van.
For the record I don't hate to see others in either old cars or shiny new vans. I welcome it, and if you aren't insecure about your business, you would as well.
Best wishes,
John.

im a balder, and i dont wear a cap., i like to have a bronzed bonce in summer, detracts from my baldness. ;D
i do wear hivis year round though, for h&s and it looks a bit more pro.

so much wfp snobbery on here as usual! ladders car van "high vis" always makes me laugh on domestics, its all just cleaning windows whatever method you choose. Don't get me wrong i have the van the wf the uniform but i have a mate has estate car laders scrufbag still does over £200 a day because he grafts unlike me who hates to clean windows for more than 6 hours 3 days a week max, now am i better than him? in some ways yes and some no but its only "cleaning windows" any dippoop can do it and wfp is creating even more. Lately i have seen tons of new shiny vans and some of the work is diabolical. Big shiny van does not mean you are better just like driving a merc instead of a mini.
there is a post about facebook on here today and most of the crap spouted on here would be better of on there, this forum is getting like eastenders, miss it for months and when you watch again its the same poop.
window cleaning is just windowcleaning simple
forum for help, advise, suppor,t problem solving, not we are better than you cos we got shiny toys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I work out of a car/estate ,but sign written+ i wear company printed t shirts
Im no cowboy ,but they do make you laugh, last year a ford fiesta with ladders on pulled up along
side of me ,ladders bigger than the car ,but today a suzuki jeep ,a piece of foam for a roof rack ,round
bucket tied to the end of the ladders followed it 3 of them got out to clean a shop window

Matt
why should it be £300, exactly? Is it the same in scotland?
-
Tim maybe it could be £500 per year.
I feel it needs to be an amount that will deter dole cheats.
Who would pay £300-£500 per year just to make some beer money?
Matt
-
mb are you crazy? you would be happy to pay another tax? dont you know these guys will be the 1st to avoid it! who will be able to police it?
-
That is something that needs work on, maybe the federation or the FSB can look into it more indepth.
Matt

Matt
the fact of it is though
if they are dole cheats, they cheat the system, they will not think twice about cheating the "licence"
how can you compare the corgi registered trademen to window cleaners ? ? ? a mistake in gas fitting and you have killed someone, a mistake in window cleaning and they have a bit of bird crap left on the window till next time
-
even if they bring out licenses, will they police it or just take ur money, as a lot of the scotish say that they dont do any thing north of the border
-
Another one gave my Mrs £20 for the baby,
bargain, dont tell angelina and brad that your selling them that cheap
-
it was £196 in scotland and you have to renew it every 3 years although it is not policed well what so ever

I totally agree, i started to look on this forum for tips and advice but because i'm trad i'm looked down upon by the WFPers, its ridiculous. After a long layoff from the building trade and speaking to a local window cleaner, i decided i was going to start window cleaning. I didn't have money spare to buy a van or the basic WFP kit (not that i considered using that method anyway) just used my ladders i already had and brought a squeegee and a mop from screwfix, printed off some basic flyers off my computer and away i went, 5 months on and i'm picking up customers daily, never had a complaint and adding to/upgrading my equipment as i go. I love the WFPers cause if it wasn't for you guys i wouldn't have picked up half my customers. As long as you do a good job whether you use WFP, trad or newspaper and vinegar, WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!! If there are so many of these cowboys about, why worry, they won't last long if they do a bad job!

i always thought a cowboy was somebody who does a crap job
all the other guff is irrelevant.
i wish i could be a seasonal cleaner 9 months of year would suit me fine
saying that isnt it that what most do on here anyway bit of snow and rain
everything stops. ;D
licenses for window cleaner as others have said what a waste of time
and money,no license has ever stopped anyone from cheating if so inclined
but if you want encourage another worthless taxation and squeeze even
more pennies out of the basically honest amongst us, a round of applause
to all involved ::)

talking of being a seasonal cleaner :) a fair few of us were this year
does that make us all cowboys ? ? ? ?

how can you compare the corgi registered trademen to window cleaners ? ? ? a mistake in gas fitting and you have killed someone, a mistake in window cleaning and they have a bit of bird crap left on the window till next time
that made me chuckle!
