Hi,
That's what a customer said to me today as a lot of her glass is scratched along the Georgian wood frames all way round. she was not accusing me of scratching the glass but said that a diamond is the only thing that will scratch glass & that my diamond ring if I wore one must be scratching as I was cleaning the glass. I put her right on two counts , one: being I don't wear a diamond ring & two: there are many things apart from diamonds that can scratch glass. I have seen this type of scratching many times before being long scratch lines on all four sides of pane. I am very sure it is painters sanding down the wood before painting.

most folk dont notice there windows are scratched, until they have been cleaned.
I once worked for another window cleaner and he got a complaint about scratched glass. It had a few 'scratch' lines, similar to perhaps a cat, scratching at the glass

You're exactly right, Kev. It's painters sanding frames.
I've only ever seen this on wooden-framed windows that have been painted/stained - and it's always on the edges.
