Yes I use 10w 40 diesel engine oil in everything from my suitcase generator right up to my 4000 psi drain jetter. Don't ever mix synthetic and mineral oils

my machine is a petrol engine though does this matter?

dont you have any problems with your exhaust going through your floor?

jan at tech clean said its a bad idea as the fumes need to rise upwards.  ???

Yes - I use 10-40 in my 13hp petrol Honda
I have my jetter exhaust blowing out through the floor but I take the pressure washer out of the van when I wash drives but I leave the hot box in the van. I can see Jans point. Take a look at a set of temporary traffic lights and see thats what they do because they lock the generator in the trailer so they pipe the exhaust through the floor. At the end of the day its your call but if I were you I'd just leave the door open if you insist on fiiting the kit in the van - I can't do that because of the jetter but I may look at a trailer this summer

I buy 20 ltr drums of oil from Costco for £35. The 10w40 is just a little thicker than the 10w30, most plant workshops don't have a range of engine oils they just stick to the one, if your concerned then buy the right one

I put 10w40 in mine ,think it was semi synthetic.
My instruction manual said I needed sae 80 pump oil for the pump although i could not find any specific 'pump oil' so I put in just Sae 80 pressuming it would be the same .

As for what is difference between 10/30 or 10/40 i believe that the numbers relate to its viscosity /flow rate at certain temperatures.

I use silolene light gear oil in my pump. Exchange engineering's pump oil is a 20w-50 or duel pump sell a specific interpump oil which is a sae 30 oil, some pumps also have a reduction gearbox between the engine and pump which would have a 80 grade oil or similar. Modern oils are quite tolerant and you don't have to be too specific and since the black engine syndrone era engine oils have mostlty the same detergants a diesel oils. The pump oil needs an anti foaming agent if you want to get anal about things ::) ::) ::)
