I did make some enquiries years ago but the premiums were just too high to make it realistic, so forgot the idea and have done nothing since. It would be interesting to hear from people that have cover but knowing so many self employed people think it will be a big minority of people that have cover.

Probably the best way to cover yourself (belt and braces) is to take insurance against your liabilities which will cover you short term and will kick in after a couple of weeks or so  and which then stop after a maximum of 12 months (eg mortgage insurance, credit card repayments) and then take out insurance against loss of income.

The second is the really expensive one but by deferring it for say 6 or 12 months keeps the premiums down to a realistic level. Bear in mind if you do consider this that it is to give you an income if you become one of the long term ill and realistically are unlikely to be able to work again.

And it's limited to 75% of your income as state benefits are designed to cover the rest.

Finally, and obviously, the higher the level of income you insure the more expensive the premiums. Oh, and you have to prove your income level as well.

If you are self employed its a waste of money, because you have to prove your wage and the time you have to wait can be up to 3 months, plus lots of insurance will not cover SE (read the small print)
If you are Ltd you can get paid sick pay, see the government web site, if you get insurance (based on being employed) it is paid out sooner .
Best place to look is with the company you have your public liability insurance with, as they might have an add on to your policy which could cost you less.

Hi

Try antinsurance cover self employed quite cheap compared to buying insurance with a loan.

I have cover for 1400 a month comes to about £70. Its just piece of mind

Something everyone should consider as sickness benefits are now means tested and if your Mrs earns over £112  a week then you get nowt

I've got 2 sickness policies and a hospitalisation policy with this company. Never had a problem with them paying out and they pay out on both policies.

Cheers all for advice, will check out the insurers posted.

So far only spoke to HSBC (Who i bank with) and for £25 a month i would be coverd for 50% of my earnings and that would kick in after 30days of injury/sickness. E.G. earn £1500 per month average then id get £750.

They also do an unemployment one where if i go bust/business fails then im coverd for same as above for 12 months while i find other employment. This is £21 a month but can only be taken with the above so total would be £46 per month.
