Title: Varistream MK2
Post by: peekeclean on February 25, 2010, 07:51:53 pm
hi guys i have a problem with my Varistream(non digital)seem like the battery is flat as the green light keeps flickering,it seems to take a long time to stop the pump and then it just keeps starting and stoping but quicker than when its checking the pressure. No leaks or airlocks just seems strange.
Iv changed my battery as my last one stoped holding a charge but i have not solved this problem?
Is it on its way out ?has anyone had this?
could it be the pump?

PS if i do have to change to the digital one what do you have it set at??

thanks joe

Had a very similar problem with the digital one today, it took me ages to figure out what was wrong.
I found I had a stoplock Hozelock connector on the reel centre, when I stopped the flow it pressurised, and the connector pushed back, the stoplock then came into operation and stopped the water going to the reel.
I took the stoplock out of the connector and it worked fine.
check your water flow before it goes into the hose reel, or just look into the connector to make sure it's not fitted with a stop.

Chuck it away, wire up direct to the battery with a toggle switch and 15amp fuse in the positive lead and fit a tap on the end of the hose.  Control flow with the tap.

You may have to adjust the pump pressure switch to prevent 'cycling' when you restrict the flow but that's all.

Works just as well, if not better and far less to go wrong.

If you ever see 'As New' (Paul Shilling) - he does quite a lot on the Island - ask him to show you his set up - he does just that and even runs two poles off the one pump with no problems.

The chap I mentioned just has a 'T' piece in the hose from the pump, and then two hose reels.  Just attach a pole to each hose reel.  A 100psi pump has more than enough power to run two poles, but not if you restrict it through a Varistream or similar.

If its attached to a trolley system, try changing the in-line fuse from the wiring on the battery to the pump/flow controller.  I know if the fuse has blown, obviously you would have no power at all, but worth a try, as i did this to mine  when had a similar problem and the fuse wire inside the plastic was as thin as a split hair.  25p at motorparts shop. Hope you get sorted.  :)
