Title: Carbon fishing pole on ebay
Post by: sparklebright on February 25, 2010, 05:11:22 pm
Took a gamble and bought an 'Avanti' 16metre fishing pole on ebay for £200.

Have converted it for wfp and it works well. You end up with a 52ft pole, thats pretty sturdy and light.  8)

Used it on a block of flats today.
Much better and lighter than the old tucker pole I've had for a few years.
And about a quarter of the price.

Thats a humdinger of a price, well done but just a note of caution, do they supply spare sections ?

Hi if it is 16 metres how did you achieve a usable 52 foot pole, taking into account that you normally lose top sections???

A good and valid question, I shall investigate.
In the past with my shorter carbon pole I tightly taped around the outside with gaffer tape on a section that cracked, which helped for a while.

No you're right that doesn't add up.
It does come with half metre extension, so it's 16.5, you lose the top 3 sections
that leaves 12metres which is 40 feet actually. But the pole is 3 foot longer than my old tucker pole which is advertised as 45ft , go figure.
The tucker pole is 8 x 6ft sections, you overlap about a foot a section, oh yeah....

i converted a 16m shimano . in the end i lost top 4 sections and it is great. roughly 40 ft and it is 2 years old going strong. i got an extra two bottom sections of a mate with a similar pole(still shimano) and they go on great. so i have extra if i ever need them. the only thing i find is i use a asda brush on mine because of the weight.mine cost 300 in sale but sold all bottom sections extra bits etc for 100 quid on ebay. so cost 200 in  end.

also forgot to add top sections are a lot smaller so you do not lose that much getting rid of them . the top three are like only one and a half in length of rest.

Sorry don't have any picks. But it's easy to make.
You need a standard pole brush and the angle adaptor, hose and gaffer tape. The pole from a B & Q broom £1.98.
Cut the top off the broom handle, (it screws straight into the angle adaptor)
Trim the number 4 of the pole until the broom handle top fits over the top tightly, (some put it inside) and glue it in place, screw on your brush an your away.
I have bought some velcro strip and will glue a small length on the base of each section so i can strap the hose to it as I put the pole up. (Not sure if this will work in practice).

My thanks go to Jeff for his trailblazing in this.
Lose the top 3 sections

From your description ,am i right to understand that the broom pole when cut, fits over the top of no4 section? This must be very small !!!I make it about the same size as a 20 pence piece!!! I bought an emporium pole which was like that and it didnt last 5 minutes.Or am i not seeing it right?

No you must trim the no 4 down until it's wide enough (about the size of a 50p)
I've had a smaller carbon pole for months and it works well.
Like any carbon fibre pole just don't stand on it!

Same here, the fishing poles are a good cheap way to get you working at those heights but they will end up getting damaged,i`ve got a 57ft Brodex carbon hydra for my high work and all sections come apart so can be used as shorter lighter pole when needed

I have examined a mates brand new Gardiners carbon pole, it's very good.
I don't think anyone would argue that a shop bought pole is better than a diy, but how much better is it?
Like most things a shop bought carbon pole is about 10% better but twice the price.

Some people tend to boast about how much they paid for something as if it's a virtue to pay more.
I could afford a shop bought pole, but as I have the wit and will to make my own I do.
I think it's a virtue to be tight  ;D

no it will stay around for a while for people to say :

a. It will never work, it will not be upto the job

b. Its not safe

c. You will look like a cowboy

d. I wouldnt bother, i have a trillion pound fishing pole for fishing

e. if you have a accident, you will be liable, they ( whoever they are ) will take your house off you, take the houses of your family and friends, take the houses off anyone you know, put you all in the village square ( as the people who will say this will be from a village, think about it  ;))  and flog you all

f. my pole is much better than that and cost much much more, so it must be much better

for real effect, you could mention its better than a ironics pole, that will get them lot on the post and it will really become entertaining
