Why do you guys go to trade shows?
Is it an anorak type of thing, or do you go to find a bargain or just to socialise?
Me, I can't think of anything worse than wasting a days earnings, travelling for a couple of hours each way for a bit of pole fondling.
I used to go to the boat show when I was mad keen on boats, jet skis and windsurfing. But windowcleaning?
Done the motorbike show too when i wanted one. But windowcleaning?
So why?
-
same reason why someone wou;d want to go to a boat show I suppose
-
To talk about each other of course! ;D
Pole fondling...............is that like "male bonding" ;D ;D
-
I couldn't tell my wife I was not earning a bean and spending the day in Birmingham looking at squeegies! She just wouldn't believe me!
What do you tell yours?
-
Dave, that thirty foot SLX will be up for grabs some time in the next two weeks I'll give you first shout if you are interested.

We are therefore from the show looking to register 200 window cleaners for August
Also there are some great seminars being run by the FWC which includes recent forum topics this year http://www.cleaning43.com/diary%2Devents/
IONICS http://www.windex.co.uk/free-seminars/?/seminar/
11.00 – 11.30 Avoiding repetitive strain injuries from the use of a squeegee

12.10 – 14.00 Working at height regulations
Andy Willis I am going to focus on flat roof access and egress and access and egress to work areas from a ladder ….I is sure we can all agree this has been a thread with interest..

Trade shows are not for everyone. They are great for the person who is looking to move ahead in the cleaning industry, and wants to see all the products and information that is out there.
Trade shows are a waste of time for the person who is just plodding along and wondering why they are always skint.

Yeah, because having a better pole or a better bit of rubber on your squeegee will mean you will expand tenfold, and gain 50 grand contracts.
Pull the other one mate. ;D
-
NVQ are brought out so that companys can say that people are trained and know how to do something, weather they do that on the job is a different matter, it will end up like all the other industries, with out an NVQ u will be classed as an apprentise and get a crap wage, or insurance will start insisting on it for all staff
-
Like I said Squeaky its not for everyone

Dave i love it, so true!!! quite good for a jolly up in the evening too!
-
Hi Craig
The jolly up is yet another good reason to go..
-
Another matter, I built up a relationship with someone i met at windex, I am currently doing £20k a year window cleaning for that person.
I have met loads of contacts and I keep my business name out there.
I love the jolly up in the evenings too, I always come back with knowledge bursting out of my ears.
Another reason is to keep abreast with what is happening in the industry, also the seminars are good, this year especially so, i have a few questions what need answering by the Willis boys.
What they have to say couldl have reverbertations around the industry for many years to come.
If you attend as a shrinking violet, you probably wont get anything out of it, if you go with an open mind and are ready to talk to people , you will soon realise 2 days isnt long enough.
-
Hmmmmmmm what would be in it for me?
Sole trader with too much work to handle. Over fifty years old, hates modern day nvq, method statements, risk assesments and any form of paperwork. Oh and doesn't drink. :-[
Surely most of the information from seminars etc and new products will surface on this forum anyway? Or is it really a place for the big boys who employ and want to mingle with like minded big boys and talk 'business'?
-
ftp
probably nothing for you
-
;D Your probably right.
-
isnt there loads of birds with short skirts and tight t shirts. thats reason enough for me ;D

I'm looking forward to meeting people from companies that we've dealt with over the past year and put a face to a name. Talking to them about their products and services, also looking at new products from different companies all under one roof, I'm sure it will be a good couple of days. Most of the companies represented there are miles from where we live so we'd never go find out what they have to offer if we didn't get to see them at the show.

Hello Susan, wow book two whole days 8)

Very true Susan, and vice versa we obviously have customers all over UK and being our first Windex with a stand it will be nice to meet some of them, aswell as our trade counter customers OBVIOUSLY!!
-
im hoping i can go, iv never been and i think after 4 years i should do some networking and see whats its all about.

I used to go to the boat show when I was mad keen on boats, jet skis and windsurfing. But windowcleaning?
Done the motorbike show too when i wanted one. But windowcleaning? So why?
As for me I am, really, mad keen on WFP last 3 years. Therefore, I spent all 3 days at the Cleaning Show last year with the great interest and looking forward visiting WindEx-2010 as well.
rgrds,
Vadim

;D its the place to touch base with everyone and everything thats going on in our world :)
-
Please guys dont tell every body about windex some will not have a excuse to be loosers.
-
FTP present company excepted
There is a type of window cleaner who mocks and sn1ggers about Windex.
"ha why should i spend 2 days finding a new pole" etc etc
These are the same types of window cleaner, who come on here and whinge about not being able to pay there tax bill, cant find new customers,
They call other window cleaners for bragging, because they hae no decent jobs themselves, I have been on the receiving end of many when I post about certain acheivements.
These are the ones who usually say "why" or "theres no point"
perhaps these people are know it alls, and know something we dont know.

Maybe, that is the first step to success, not mocking behind your keyboard.
I would listed to Mr Woods carefully, he is a man who is running a £million plus (very conservative) set up.
Not Mr whinge Pants "wonder why I am skint " window cleaner

He was mocking to start with, and people so up their own arse get it back.
I'll say it again then... "Yeah, because having a better pole or a better bit of rubber on your squeegee will mean you will expand tenfold, and gain 50 grand contracts!
Come on then Mr.AlwaysKnowBetter... lets have an answer. ???

No, I want to know how looking bigger and better poles and squeegees is going to make your round better!

No, I want to know how looking bigger and better poles and squeegees is going to make your round better!
did I refer to you.
Rog
You are the only one who mentioned it was just poles.
going to trade shows CAN seriously affect your wealth, the squeegies and poles are just a start, all part of the bigger picture
-
Well alright then. Purification stuff, brushes, pumps and whatever then.
Better equipment won't change anything, just cost you money!
-
ok rog
-
So basically you can't answer it...
It's just an excuse for people with big businesses to get together and pat each other on the back and boast, and look to at £500 poles and stuff and say "Ooh...I don't like the 173 degree angle of that..." etc...
To the average window cleaner it would be interesting but that's it.
-
So, apart from straight roads, sewers, baths, central heating, fresh water systems etc etc
What did the Romans ever do for us then?
;D
-
Rog
Damn you found us out it is all true.
You had better not come then.
-
Is there a charge for entry?
-

It's not for me but if i thought about employing i would go and network. I also reckon those big businesses when patting each other on the back are maybe sealing a deal for a business opportunity. ;D
But like i say, not for me at this moment in time.
-
Us companies that have a stand, spend alot of money to show, so we obviously have equipment we think is new and of interest not just to the large companies but also small, we have some good bolt on on products.
large successful companies are successful for a reason they have worked hard and reinvested lots of money.
Most window cleaners want to better them selves and expand, however some have the total wrong attitude no corporate clothing maybe no h&s policy etc or even insurance, and these are the ones that have to save for a basic pole etc and comment on the car you drive (not seeing that sometimes you work till midnight), so its prude to re invest , because this is how companies grow, the opportunity is there for all.
summery these shows are there for a reason.
-
Is there a charge for entry?
It's free to go to! Just go online and register and they'll send you an ID badge ;D

I went to my first trade show in blackpool, it gave me the chance to see all the products and actually have a go of them whilst asking some questions, i also got hte opportunity to speak to fellow wc's and also ask questions and learn little tricks. You will see the best of the stuff out there at trade shows and also have the chance to network and speak to people in the same line of business as yourself.
However if your happy plodding along as your are at the moment and you dont want to move on and learn then stay at home or just go out and clean. I am personally going to leave my house as early as possible to go down on the thursday and then leave at 12.30 ish to get back for a job at 2.30, in the two hours im there i know i will learn what i need to learn and also buy what i need to buy.
Why slag off trade shows where you actually go outside and talk to real people face to face, but then sit at home on the internet all day talking to cyber people ???
-
I cannot believe that there are member who wnat to make money out of window cleaning and wont take the time to invest in your own futher, not speaking money but time.To be imformed on what is going on in your industry is what divides the businesses from the self employed.Happy to plod along is not for me but for those who are happy to.Well less to compeat with.
-

How many people are going to come up to you and say "can you do my windows please?"
Not many I doubt.
I'm sorry, but I won't buy it until someone's a bit less vague than "To be informed" or "To network" or "To see the future"
How exactly can you be better off for a jolly to brag with other window cleaners about poles?
-
Didn't you say exactly the same about wfp? There were no benefits, you were the fastest trader this side of the pecos mountains, you spent half your time loafing in the caff' but still knocked out a wage wandering around chepstow balancing your ladders on a push bike.
.....Then we have brand the new van, sl2, edgy signwriting, and a new improved been to the gym rog. You've made a mint since you switched, and even take the mick out of your mate because he still drives a rickshaw.
If anyones an advert for progress and enlightenement it's you.
-
Hi Rog (Squeeky Clean),
I and many others spent a good 6 months and a lot of thought trying to convince a doubting thomas to see the light and "go waterfed and save your life", glad your still here :). It was very very very difficult .
But I aint going to spend another minute trying to do the same to open your eyes to Windex specially as you have now become a supplier with your own blinkered point of view and agenda. You no longer need our help to see the possibilities as your a businessman. As you said above "I wont buy it", I agree with Clive
-
;D guys at the end of the day These shows are just the bigger picture of window cleaning and just cost you time and some petrol to go,shows are free I am there when these shows are being set up and the work behind it is quite some thing ::) to watch and come together its all about finding out whats new what works best, one day there will be a squeegee on the market thats like a formular 1 car for me that will go as fast as I want, you know what theres not one yet they all have there restrictions ::)
-
this "bigger picture " , is this where the "godfathers" of the window cleaning world get together and slice up thecake on the big jobs?
is there an inner circle who says stuff like---
"nobody moves south of the Thames without my say so " etc etc ?
or have i been watching to many films? ;D
-
As someone said earlier.
It is very sad spending a day at Windex, touching and feeling all the new equipment, talking to fellow window cleaners.
Why would anyone want to do that when you can spend up to 1000 hours a year on cleanitup instead,
Windex total waste of time ;D
-
How can anyone serious about their business say that a trade show is a waste of time.
Even if you get nothing out of it (i fail to see how) you will be keeping abreast of ideas that the industry that you have chosen to work in has to offer.
Ok many (and i wont quote figures because i dont know them) will not go to network to increase their business precense, but surely an individual wc could gain some benfit and motivation from being at such an event.
Live in the dark ages at your own peril, because like it or not the industry that you make a living from is changing rapidly and those at the forefront will become the players in the future.
-
I would love to go, I really wanted to attend the HSE seminars.
When Willis (is it Mr Willis?) asked me on here a couple of weeks ago I would have loved to have said yes.
In all honesty the reason Im not going is I CANNOT do enclsoed places with lots of people. Maybe its clostrophobia, is that why I work outside ;D
Also the jolly in the evenings wouldnt be my cup of tea.
Having said that I would love to meet the suppliers that I talk to on the phone, Id love to fondle someones pole, whats that recent one that Brodex have brought out?
Theres no doubt in my generally 'closed but trying to keep open' mind that something like Windex can only be a good thing. Suppliers listening to customers first-hand was the first thing that sprang to mind, hearing what they want, what bugs them and what they love can only be good.
Id also like to think I could be a 'player' in this grand old game, but thats not who I am. Thats just not me. But well done to those who are going, I guess if we didnt have these kind of events our industry would be 15 years behind itself; Im sure these things make us a 'WE' instead of a 'ME'.
Matt

I think you're thinking of someone else thanks.
I don't do cafes and I've never used a bike at work, always had a car. ???
-
Hmmm....listening to customers, keeping abreast, networking... still not answer.
It's not going to give you more work or better work.
I never said it WAS a waste of time, I'm just waiting to hear a reason why it isn't.
So far no-one has one... ???
It's like talking to politicians. ;D
-
Have you ever been to Windex Roger?
-
Squeaky - now come on! Don't be coy - you know old slumps is exaggerating the point to put over your general demeanour - and he's pretty much spot on! ;)
-
We all know this thread will go around in circles, can we just move on.
the Question is "Windex Why ?
Not will a squeegie make me more money
-
Hmmm....listening to customers, keeping abreast, networking... still not answer.
It's not going to give you more work or better work.I suppose being on CIU does not actually give you more or better work, but for me at least, it had helped me over the past 5 years or so to know what I should be doing to 'help myself' to get more or better work. I have never been to a window cleaning trade show, but I have been to a few trade shows when i had a garden design business and found it not only an inspiration but very informative on the way forward.
I never said it WAS a waste of time, I'm just waiting to hear a reason why it isn't.
So far no-one has one... ???So many people on here complain about suppliers, maybe not you Rog, but at trade shows you do get the chance to see face to face the suppliers that many have been dealing with for some time. Again at a trade show I struck up a 'relationship' with a horticultural supplier that I didn't know before, while I was in business they supplied me. Had I not been to that show I would not have been able to see the quality of plants and would not have dealt with them.
It's like talking to politicians. ;D
I think if you have the view that it is a waste of time, it will be. If you go with an open mind however you may well come back with a different view. Its like CIU in a way. There are those on here who will defend their way of doing things 'to the death' there are others, like you and me, who eventually come round to an alternative way of thinking and are the better for it. I guess unless you try it you don't really know what your missing ;)
-
Well I say its worth going to see what some of the new equipment is really like. After this year I might be considering a hot system before next winter.
You can't beat actually eyeballing things and speaking to the people face to face when making your mind up about the product and them.
Websites are good for researching and pricing up but at the end of the day you can't beat actually seeing the stuff for real. Besides Coventry is only a couple of hours drive at the most.

Matt .......you may find this strange to believe but I actually hate attending seminars...and am not really looking forward to the Windex semminar, but it’s part of my general commitment to playing a very small part of improving the window cleaning industry.
Come and attend the seminar, and call in for a coffee on stand B2

No, but if I wasn't interested I wouldn't be asking the reason why I should.
I'm just waiting for more than politicians dodging the questions!

Trade shows operate for a reason,it's not just the window cleaning industry that has one.
I used to exhibit in the furniture show many years ago at the nec, they also had a ceramics show there, there is the caravan show,i would go so far as to say that every trade/industry would have a show in some form or another...are they all a waste of time,i doubt it but they probably have sceptics who cant see past the end of their noses as well.

From your tone Rog, it looks like you are just out for trouble.
Your first post was a Mickey Take at what D. Woods said.
What do really expect with the replies ?

After reading all the posts , I want to go now!

Only because he was being condescending to anyone earning less than 200K.
I'll always give it back, maybe I shouldn't, but I will defend myself.
Doesn't matter, forget it...
-
Hi Rog / Squeeky
I was beeing condescending to people earning less than £150k not £200k
that would be silly
-
Dave
I thought it would of been those, Turning over less than £5mill ;D
-
Matt
Its not as claustrophobic as you think, the ceilings are huge, the arena is as big as a football pitch, its not crowded at all.
-
Hi Dave
5 Million that would be awesome.

The outside area of the FWC exhibition in Blackpool is a hands on area, three floors plus that may suit you.

This thread has made me book my ticket ;D

Im changing my mind Chris, but ive got something on so I dont think i can make it! :o

Can you park outside?
Just had a look at the website, it names the exhibitors, but no links. How much effort would it take for a PR person to come on here and give us a run through of how easy (or otherwise) it is to park and give us a quick run through of the line up.
Of course we know the easy names brodex, pure freedom, ionics, etc, but some we don't know and they might have a pre show pitch for us.
These people pay good money to exhibit and someone should try to promote this.I've had tickets through the post of course, ettore sent me some and i think brodex too, but a PR person should be on here whipping us up into a frenzy.
Plenty post when they come back, and i think, i wish i'd gone to that, but what's needed is a bit of prematch build up.

Foreplay makes the event much more satisfying eh slumps? ;D

I take my little moments where i can.....
Squeaks decides to go after all and wandering around spots what he thinks is a good caff'.It's like being at home on the round he thinks only free.A cup of coffee with willis sounds good. Two hours later his head thumps with health and safety. ;D ;D
What are you on about you oddity? ???

i would think going to the shows can possibly help out with future contracts ect, there are always new and faster tools being developed, and put on at the show, one of those product could give you the edge over your competitor, that did not know about this new available product, simply becuse he never went to the show, any way my reason for going is to meet my subcontractors to hand over their back handers ;D ;D

Ionics have, amongst other things a new short section "Swift" telescopic pole starts from 35 feet and a redisgn of the Glyder.
-
can you give us a good reason why your not going ftp?
and not the easy one ' i cant be bothered got to much work on'
-
Me? To be honest I haven't seen any answers that would entice me to travel to Birmingham. I don't find cleaning windows exciting, I don't drink so would find socialising a tad boring. I don't employ and so don't need any big contracts. Can't stand the red tape coming in to this industry so wouldn't be prepared to sit through a seminar. Wouldn't want to give up a couple of days earnings.
I'm not saying who's right or wrong, just interested to see what drives people to visit these shows and the reasons they find it interesting.

So, apart from straight roads, sewers, baths, central heating, fresh water systems etc etc
What did the Romans ever do for us then?
;D
