Most will say mount pump as low as possible - which makes perfect sense. However my sureflo is mounted over halfway up my 500L upright tank and "touch wood" I've had no air lock or other problems in over 2yrs.

I would say mount as low as possible, with the pump head down. We have trouble when the weather gets below freezing and we have to thaw out and re-prime pumps - we have both Flojet and Sureflo and they both take a lot of re-starting if they have run dry, or been drained to stop them freezing up.
