Hi all,
I have worked out a system to record my business mileage, but can any of you clarify something with regards to this?
Does business mileage include travel from home to my 1st job of the day, & also from my last job of the day, & back home again?
Many thanks,
Ian.

i use to claim that, as its business,

Hi Daz,
Thanks for the reply!
I post this same question on a business forum, & they suggested taking this up with an accountant, but they think I have confused this with say someone that has a company car, which is used to travel to their office for example.
Thanks again.

i cake it that u use the car for pleasure and work then
if you own a other vehicle, just declare all milage as business and that u use the other for normal
if you dont, then just right down millage at start of day and at end of day and then add these all up at end of tax year

My accountyant once told me that the mileage to my first job and the mileage homeward from the last job should not be counted. The exception is if the IR agree with you that you work from home. This was a long time ago and may have changed.
I put it to my accountant that my first and last jobs of the day should be the ones that are close to home. Get enough jobs close to home and do two of them per day - one at each end. This was a bit tongue in cheek and he never answered - he just laughed :)

I have always claimed from when I leave in the morning till I get home at night.
It's not just a case of me getting to a job, it's carrying all the equipment so that I can do the job when I get there.
As far as I'm concerned the job starts when I check that the ladders are still tied on before I leave in the morning, and it ends when all my water is loaded ready for the next day.
I have never had the accountant or the tax man query it.

Hi again,
I attended a tax workshop last year with lots of other people in a similar situation to me, & this was being talked about, as if you claim from the moment you leave home, right up until you get back home.
I was going to raise this question, but didn`t want to look silly :-[, or face the same flack that the woman from the IR was getting, lol.

Mine has never been queried either Dai.
I don't bother with mileage calculations or anything so pedantic myself.
My van is my only vehicle.
I live on my own.
Therefore I call 85% of any vehicle expenses as business and 15% is personal. I did check this over a couple of sample periods some years ago with the mileage. Once it was a bit over and once a bit under so I reckon that for my lifestyle 85% is about right. In fact, maybe I should call it a bit more for business use as I don't travel out socialising as much as I used to. My accountant thought he had caught me out a while back (it's a little game we play ;D ). He noticed that I put a battery down as a 100% item. I then had to explain the subtle difference between the van battery and how I use a leisure battery.

You are driving to work .Your office is at homr threrfore your first costie is business and aftre the last custies you drive to your office which is at home so all driveing is business.

I agree. I think though that if you wish the IR to regard you as a home worker, you have to agree it with them first.
I feel that the best argument in our favour is that we are carrying tools to work. The very act of transporting those tools is part of the work itself.

Hi again,
It makes sense & sounds good to me.
Thanks again.
