Thing is the barrel is circular, which isnt going to make it easy.

I would have said either as close to the ground as possible so gravity feeds the water to the pump.

Or for easy of fitting the connector but depending on the pump being able to suck the water out I would fit it to the flat lid.

Drill a hole on the lid and cut a length of rigid plastic pipe that reaches almost to the bottom of the barrel.  Join them all together and hey presto

indeed

or even better

cut the feed hose the length needed to hit the bottom ( and a bit more )
cut a short bit of ali pipe and slide it onto the feed hose, fit a end fitting to the pipe and the ali pipe will stay on the pipe and weight it down to the bottom

it works well

yep that what i would have done hole through lid and drop
hose in

i used to do that with my freedom trolley with a hose
dropped into a 400 ltr tank,so shoulsd have no trouble
with a little barrel :)
