whats the score with using ladders then..can we... ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
Thanks
-
yes and no, u can only use them when no other alternative is available or suitable, basically its up to you, but if you have an accident, its weather the insurance will pay out, as they say you shouldnt of used it its a grey area

http://www.hse.gov.uk/press/2005/e05110.htm
have a look at this link, itas what the h and s said about ladders on newsnight
-
Using ladders is fine, as long as you dont climb up them.
Personaly I use mine to hang my washing on. ;D
-
Depends how you interpret it. It can be read either way, as has been proved on here before.
But no, ladders are not against the law! ;D
-
Ladders CAN be used, if they were illegal they wouldnt be sold, go see what BT use to access their poles in the street, its a ladder.
Ladders can be used, just be responsible.
-
But BT secure top and bottom at least they do here
-
Thats because theyre up them for a longer period of time. It only takes 2 minutes to clean a window.
The H & S havent banned ladders, end of story.

H&S have limited the use of them and covered the nanny state rules on them, not banned but hurt yourself and leave yourself option to ridicule from the hse

If you have a risk assessment and method statement written for going up ladders (generic one is fine) then that goes a long way to proving you were using them responsibly if a problem occurs.
A small cost to get them done in the first place and then you have them if you need them.
I know it is a pain, but if you want some backup, that's what you need.
-
Exactly Ian (windowashers), we shouldnt get confused between rules/guidelines/suggestions though and law.
The thread question was can we use them. The answer is yes.
-
can i use them on my own like my dad used to or do i need to be footed?
i am100% is ok with the people that are saying they dont like wfp but i hear wfp guys saying i cant use a ladder and should get a wfp ...
i dont take risks with ladders and will leave a window if the ground is green or bad angle for the the ladder
i do have ladder mats on order
anything eles i can buy for my trade ladder that will keep hs happy
thanks
-
As long as you have used, and can prove you have used all safety precautions, then you can use ladders. It is NOT illegal to use them, but if you have an accident, you will need to prove that you took every step (no pun intended) possible to prevent an accident.
That is why having a company policy on ladder use along with method statements and risk assessments covers your back, I can't stand all the paperwork, but unfortunately they are a necessary evil today.
-
a mate down the pub said his mate told him they are all gunna get confiscated by the ladder police . so they must be banned ;) ;)
-
im still not se what saftey precautions can be used when taking my ladder of the roofrack and cleaning a window..surley i dont have to secure the ladder at either end just to clean a window for 30 seconds or 2 mins etc

Matt, what do you use to comply with the law, yes law on using ladders, the law that was passed in parlament and said you can use ladders, if you follow the law. They are not banned, true, but what do you do before using a ladder ?
idealrob
-
Me? What do I do to comply with the law?
I use them as when I want.
-
if you said that, it would be ok, but you said there are no grey areas according to you.
I ve asked a simple question, you cant answer. Fact
are you breaking the law, do you beleive its a law, cos you said its black & white
idealrob
-
And whats so grey about what I said in my last post?
As for the question I cant answer, what?

Someone please delete this thread, some people are just hard work, and this whole topic, its like groundhog day

Matt, you wont answer the question, just like a politician, why?
Dont leave it grey, make it black & white, come on Matt, or are you too frightened to face the truth ?

What feckin question are trying to imply I havent answered. If you know so damn much why havent you contributed in a positive fashion to this thread instead of trying to make out others are ignorant??
Answering questions, that the issue is it? Well answer the original fecking question yourself Mr Comedian.

There are some aspects of this legislation that seem a bit open to interpretation,.. So I've just e-mailed the HSE and asked them to clarify some things. I'll post their reply if & when I receive it.

All of them,

THANKSYOU MR JONES ;)

Ooooh, getting upset are you Matt, you carry on not answering any question. I am not getting involved in an argument and various comments going on forever.

End of my input on this matter, could leave it with a throw away comment, but leave thast to the childish ones who swear

While I wouldn't put it quite so errrrm ... pointedly as gary "flying" mallett :) - I do despair in this day and age when someone doesn't go wfp straightaway rather than go through all the angst of changing over later.
Besides safety which is paramount; my earnings have been transformed by going wfp and then honing that skill ... I truly wish others would do the same. When I see the proliferation of wet slippery decking I am even less inclined to ever use ladders again.
And I certainly don't laugh when I hear of a trad. guy falling - it seems to happen with a steady regularity - remember a few years back when we clubbed together to send a donation to the widow of a chap who fell?
And a mate of mine - two months ago fell and knackered his heels; still off work now. Brain the size of a planet, educated to degree level but wouldn't grasp how wfp would be far better for him...
Tragic.
-
he haas got the right name mallett oh sorry timy mallet

timy ???

I dont think they will ban ladders. The rumour of banning ladders been around for a long time.
As for WFP yes its great we have WFP but not every customer likes WFP. WFP is fine on commercial work.On residential it does not matter how you market WFP, some residential customers just do not like it.
Also I know of a shopping centre where WFP is actually banned as they do not want the walk ways left wet. So they have to use traditional.
Then its a case of either lose the work or use traditional methods.
Also no matter what system is in place there will always be a risk of some kind. Even with WFP there is a risk of trailing pipes, Water possible making the area slippery. the list goes on. Then ther is the argument of the amount of water being wasted with WFP.
With traditional there is not much water wasted.

At last, a sensible and objective view point :)
-
yes ladders are ok to use.im 100% trad but i use a ladderstopper and dont go up higher than firstfloor.any wet decking/gravel driveways etc i use my trad pole.ive also got ladder mitts.
i will be adding wfp later this year and i will be using it on all upstairs windows when possible.if there are any issues with the custy i will trad the downstairs windows.
ill always have a need for ladders but the risk will be drastically reduced.
up and over garage roofs to clean the back of certain properties if not in.
climbing over locked gates
very dirty first cleans
esp if theirs paint/putty/pollen baked on the window!
gutter clearing
-
i did use ladders for 15 years until the 18.12,09 i fell broke my arm and my leg will not be going back to work for 6 months so i would say to you if you want to sit in a wheel chair for 6 weeks and not walk properly for along time then go and get a ladder
-
Where's your leg going to go when you are at work? Didn't understand quite ???
-
sorry to here that duff hope it heals soon so you can get back out there.ive also been cleaning trad for years(16!) and ive fell off twice!once about 14 years ago then again about 10 years ago.both times the ladder slipped right down the wall and i landed on my heels!hurt my back a bit with the shock up my spine but i was back working the next day!i was very lucky!
i use a rojak ladderstopper and use extension poles for dodgy windows now.im defo getting a van/wfp later this year after a lot of mulling over whether to or not i think its the way forward for all of us.
you will never eliminate all risk as you could trip over your hose and give yourself a nasty injury etc but i think there is less chance.just dont go getting a backpack and do your back in humping barrels about! ;D ;D
best wishes duff for a speedy recovery mate
regards
