Cleaned a house this morning as normal,and had a few windows to do ,when this chap who always previously seemed friendly ,leaned out of his window ,and said "im on nights ,so finish that one and f--- off will you". I was a bit taken aback and im wondering whether to bother doing them again,what do you reckon.

Smile, say yep ok..bill him the full amount.

Yeah, I would have just billed them for the full amount and not gone back again.

Don't take it to heart, everyone has off days and he's probably got the hump cos he's on nights. So I would have done as Dave suggested.

agree with pingu get full ammount and not bother with him anymore no one should tell you to f*** off .When I quote for a job I always ask if anyone in house does nights then if they do always try and do them as late as poss

Depends if its a good job or not. well paid? always pays on time? we all have off days!

Give him a phone call and apologise for waking him up say you didnt know he was on nights and in future you will contact him a day or 2 before to see what he is working that way you will know - you will probably find he will apologise when you call him if he dosnt then drop him you cant do anymore for people like that.

I used to work nights and i know how that fella at that particular time of day. For all you know he might've been disturbed countless times that morning and unfortunatly for you he let rip ;)...Don't worry too much about it just go back next month and do the windows again ;)

Just thought id let you know that the chaps wife came round my house with a letter and money to apologise for the husband as hes just started nights and struggling with it.
I appreciated their apology and will phone beforehand to say if they want doing when in their area next time.

This may be a thread concerning a grumpy customer who told their window cleaner to clear off in no uncertain terms, and given the context of how he was told to clear off I think it is right to leave the asterisked swearword as it stands.
But in your replies, please avoid the use of said language...
And yes, I know, picky, picky picky, but admin ABSOLUTELY forbids foul language.
Anyway, should a customer speak to me like my initial reaction would be to apologise for waking him, grit my teeth and do as he requested.
I'd bill him for the full amount and I'd dump the account from there on in.
But of course it also depends on tone of voice and inflection doesn't it?
spoken in a tired but casual voice you can accept it, but a window thrown open and being spoken to angrily in a loud voice for instance would have left me telling him that I won't be spoken to like than and that he can shove the job up his backside >:(

I'd leave the bill for the full amount and I would never clean his windows again. Simple really.
I notice that some responses here have been more conciliatory than mine. The truble is that if I were to continue cleaning for him, I would always be wondering when the next outburst would occur. One of the things I like the most about being self-employed is that I have more choices about the type of atmosphere in which I wish to work (or not). I choose not to work for customers who are abusive to me or cause undue stress.

What I would do depends on a few different things:
1. My mood.
2. The customers size.
3. The customers temperament.
4. Have I anything hard and heavy to hand?
5. Is Wor Lass with me?
6. What witnesses are around?
7. How spiritual am I feeling?
8. Do I care at that moment about any subsequent police investigation?
The best case scenario is that I would do as requested, billed the guy, and not worry about it. The worst case scenario is that I would knock the living daylights out of the cheeky git! ;D
