Title: UPS "Invoice" (Virus Warning)
Post by: Jim_77 on January 14, 2010, 10:59:43 pm
Just received an email supposedly from UPS couriers:

Dear customer!

The courier company was not able to deliver your parcel by your address.
Cause: Error in shipping address.

You may pickup the parcel at our post office personaly!

Please attention!
The shipping label is attached to this e-mail.
Please print this label to get this package at our post office.

Please do not reply to this e-mail, it is an unmonitored mailbox.

Thank you.
United Parcel Service of America.

The email had an attachment which was a zip file.  Inside the file is an executable file which is doubtlessly some sort of virus or malware.

IF YOU RECEIVE THIS SORT OF THING DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT!!!  You'll be inviting some sort of problem into your computer.

The bad spelling, poor grammar (sounds like a foreigner wrote it) and plain old 'times new roman' font really gives it away as a hoax, plus the fact that I'm not expecting anything from a courier!!

Strangely my antivirus didn't recognise it as anything dangerous so it may be brand new.  Be warned, be aware :)

I am due for a parcel delivery and I dont know who the carrier is.
Lets hope I dont get an email from "UPS" about the time I think the parcel is due - but thanks everyone for the advanced notice.

Basically do not open any attatchment that you are not 100% sure of. I had a animated Christmas card attatched to an mail from a good friend of mine. Without thinking I opened it and as a result have had to reformat my computer and reload everything again. All sorts of things started happening. When I went on the bank website to pay a bill it went to a very convincing fake page asking for me to 'confirm your passworrd and login details' I spoke to the bank and they admitted this was happening and they were trying to find out how it was done.
I went on a couple of websites recommended by a geek friend of mine and they said they could not remove either of the trojans on my mc.
So beware. Its taken me days to sort it out.

Missis had one today in an email.........and opend it :-\

The pc was buggerd, went funny colours, photos dissapeard, loads of pop ups. Had a trojan virus, had a PC guy out to sort it, took PC away and is bringing it back tommorow. No major damage or security probs but did bugger it up.

He asked what security software we use, said mcafee and norton on laptop. He said both aint that good and dont protect against all viruses so told us to use AVG - which we now have.

Cost £100 all together :-\
