Has anyone tried to claim any benefits due to not working because of the weather? I've tried hadn't worked since 20th Dec. They rang today and I told them I've been out since I put in a claim and earned £300. They said I could still be entitled to some money because they backdate it. Got interview tomorrow.

They said if I haven't earned over £100 for each week I've been off I'll be entitled to something. Anyway it's worth a try! will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

I think that you have to officially close your books. Once you do this you would have to tell them if you earned any money.
If you get any of the Tax Credits you will have to notify them about any other benefits you recieve.

Told them I've got plenty of work just haven't been able to do it because of the weather. They told me I'm entitled to claim jobseekers allowance. Told them that I've worked today and they said I could still be entitled to money for the weeks I haven't worked. They also advised me to keep my claim open while the weather is still bad in case I can't work in the next few weeks. I don't get tax credits or any other benefits.

usually they say tough luck as you should of saved money, as you know your job can be determined by the weather, u can put a claim in, but if you are not up to date with ur ni they might knock it back,

If im not mistaken, back in the 80's when i tried to claim, cos of bad weather, they said "Unless you pay the higher National Insurance stamp, like 'The Fishermen do' then your onto nothing". I think fishermen could claim, but not W/Cs. >:(

Thanks for the info. They've told me all that. They said i'm entitled to claim £100 for the weeks I haven't worked for me and my wife(she works with me). Will find out tomorrow if I'll get it. Worth a try though any extra money is a help. Last time I claimed was 12 years ago and I got 2 weeks money from them then because of the bad weather.

The only benefits I've had since I've been self-employed were sickness benefits quite a few years ago. I was also excused my NI payment for the sick weeks. I heard they changed the rules though to stop this. To show how long ago this was, it was in the days when they still sent giros.

no they havnt i just had 6 weeks on sick got £64 benifit and NI suspended

I agree,I was on dole when i started up,they wanted me to go in every fortnight and fill forms in to see how much i had earned and how many hours i had done, right ball ache.ditched it in the end, after 5-6 weeks on dole i only got paid for 1 week and the docked a days dole off that, think people who work in there are more idle than half the claimers!!! did my head in ::)

In Ireland if you're self employed and your business goes belly up or you get injured, you're entitled to,.... NOTHING!
I pay more taxes, insurances and levy's than any person in "employment" and actually get less entitlements because of it!!
I'm seeing a new accountant soon (Switching from my old one who overcharged me this year), and asking him about setting up a company & "employing" myself so that at least if I break both my legs & can't work I'd be able to give myself a P45 and sign on!
