Hi callum macleod
As far as I know there are only 2 types of glass.
Glass is made basically with silicon (sand) and soda ash which tends to be the every day glass etc.
The other uses lead instead of soda ash.
Very basically, most glass today is made by pouring molten glass onto a large tray which has liquid tin in it. The glass is lighter than the tin and so floats. It's left to cool and the tin goes solid before the glass. Then the glass goes solid and hey presto ...........

I didn't know that Ross! You learn stuff here everyday!

walk past houses with aluminium frames...nightmare with WFP!!!
Go to ALL the good condition leaded windows as you can command a higher price and they come up great with the pole.

Hi Steve
Is that real leaded windows or the ones with strips of lead stuck on the glass?

Hi MalcG
I'm a real sad nerd. I went on a free tour of the huge Pilkington factory up north somewhere. I was fascinated. It was so interesting.
Hi kingfisher
We done the windows today of a house where the stick on leaded strips were on the inside.
Odd eh?
I've never come across that before but we charged according to the fact that leaded stuff costs more because it's all done by hand bashing.
Well, it looked like the usual leaded stuff from the outside.
Ever done a place where when you cloth it the leaded strip comes all unstuck? It's a nightmare.

old warped original leaded can be done ok, but you have to look carefully for cracks, missing panes and leaks.
I prefer the newer, good condition leaded.
The ones where it comes off, make sure you point it out to the owner so that they want you to continue without apportioning any blame to you.

hi ross so you went up to St helens then I lived about 15 miles from there and I went there with the school and it was intresting i do agree with that
