Title: hot water and broken windows
Post by: bridger windows on December 30, 2009, 02:53:43 pm
I have had thermopure for about a month and have broken 2 windows already, one the water was far too hot hjad it on winter setting and water was about 75c but the other one i broke was on cold day at about 60c. Should i just run it cold on cold days to be safe or am i really unlucky?

There is a reason some do not use Ionics and you have just found the first.

.............
A lot (most of) the products they sell are made by others and cobbled together.

D.I.Y with a price tag, only thing they have is a tank frame clamp to make them a little different, oh and the price difference even with basic items others sell  a lot cheaper :o

You could modify the system a bit with a thermostatic valve,... but it'd prob destroy any warranty you have on the system.

Why dont you contact ionics with the problem and see what their answer is?

Do not modify the system as this would definatly be a problem to the warrenty

Were these single glazed or double glazed units?
Double glazing would be more tolerant to different temps because of the vacuum between the two panes of glass.

Ive got an older thermopure with no summer or winter setting, and i have never broken a window?
I have another webasto hot system that you can control the temp on, i still cant understand why ionics havent put the adjustable heat exchanger and all the extras on their newer systems?

The ionics is a 4kw and my new one is a 9kw.

We have 4 of the 9kw systems. 3 have the winter/summer switch. The other just has one temp.

Do you know if you can buy a thermostat seperately from Webasto?

You would just have to change the heat exchanger over, i dont know how expensive they are, but yes you can buy them seperate. How long have ionics been doing the 9kw?

The boilers cost about £2000 if that's what you mean.

They have been doing the 9kw from the start 2003.

No the heat exchanger, its the long silver part, lots of lines on it.
Its nowhere near 2k, my new webasto 9kw set up cost about that new inc blowers, timer and frost protection.

very interesting. We need a new one of those as the original one just burst on one of the systems just burst.

Where did you get the replacement from

I would also like the other stuff to get built in frost protection. What parts would I need?

I use Diesco in Ipswich. But if you go to the webasto website, put in a search for your local sales and service centre. There was a guy on here a while back and said that a company in liverpool was the cheapest he found, but when i searched and contacted a few they were all within pounds of each other, but that was for a full set up.
You would need a probe and a timer set, think the probe was around £150, and the blowers were around the same. But if you speak to your local dealer, and even take the van down to them, they will be able to tell you what you need and how to set it up.
Did you mean the heat exchanger blew up? This, so i have been told, is a common fault with them, well the webasto ones anyway, they blow seals, i have already gunked mine up to make it last longer.I have already had a new flame ignitor as well, got very clogged up. Again i have been told this is because we run them everyday for hours on end.

Thanks for the info. We used a local company to service our boilers. Will check with them.

Just to make sure we are talking about the same item. It's the silver heat exchanger which has the heated coolant running in one way and the pure water going in the other direction.

The water in it must have been slightly above 000 tds as I assume it has frozen and caused the viens inside to split. This has then caused the coolant to mix with the pure water. Nightmare!

Have drained the system, bypassed the heat exchanger, fitted a polisher and am now running it cold until I can get a new heat exchanger.

All this at the end of December when we are trying to get everything done before the holiday! Ho hum...
