Hiya Guy's....
Hittin us all now our nightmare :-\,frozen pipes,reels,tanks...the list goes on........ :'(
Nothing worse than going to work to find out nawt working, jets froze, reels froze....etc....
if we had warmish water in our tanks or some sort ov van aux heater to keep the van from freezing...we would be fine.....
You can buy a fishtank heater etc for a tenner....240v keeps water at the temp u want.....i know diff volt but theres gadgets to change that.
U can buy a parrafin heater cheap........keep the van warm(stinks tho :)) ???
carnt ex drive about & leave it burning away ::)
Surely there must be something we can all use to keep our water at a temp to use on a cold day?
The price ov the thermo.... hot water systems are stupid....even the cheaper add ons £3000 plus....EH!!!!!!
You can buy a combi-boiler for fraction price
Are these company's cashin in on our needs....its not realistic paying that sort ov coin for a few weeks ov ice
Just rammbiling on ::),but i'd be very intrested if anyone gave it a go at a diy system etc......
HAPPY CHRISTMAS FELLA'S
Kindest regards
J

How about an electric blanket?
Look on the 'this will keep water tanks warm' thread for a cheap portable option.
-
its been done hasnt it ? ? ?
the L5 heater
my take on this heater and the arguements against it
the biggest arguement seems to be the issue of having it run whilst you are not near the van, well thats easy to get over :)
get yourself a 100 L tank, insulate it, run your L5 into that whilst you unreel your hose / get poles out etc etc
that water will stay hot in a insulated tank for a while, long enough to work with
then fill top up when you are close to your van whilst reeling in / putting away poles etc etc
-
there are various threads on here about people using heaters to keep everything freezing up but i just use a trad pole for upstairs windows in freezing weather with screenwash in my bucket and leave windows above flat roofs until next time.ok on normal domestic work.keeps me ticking over and paying my bills.works well for me.no freezing water on the ground etc.when i do go wfp i will still use this method in really cold weather.

no point in you guys just putting a heater in your vans as HOT AIR RISES and itll only be the air high up thatll be warm wont it . you need to have some kind of heat source/pad UNDER your tank
and put a really good insulated jacket over the top of your tank
-
::) heater in your van on a timer ... works like a dream....the rest is impossible to avoid... water freezing on glass...
tubes and hoses freezing during the day etc.
warming the van overnight is the easy bit.
-
Why no use insulatio the solid board type and fit under floor heating under the tank which you put on at nite then use a l5 to pre heat while you set up dinrect into main tank and also when you pack up after each job.i know one get under carpet heating that is some sort of fibre net.Thsi would be perfect for keepinf you tank warm.
-
To my mind there are three issues - keeping r/o, tank, hoses and pump frost free; water freezing at point of delivery; and freezing on the ground afterwards.
If you have access to mains electricity the first is readily solved. Cover your tanks with polystyrene foam and maybe add ply on top of that. Put an oil filled radiator in your van at night.
Your van is sorted.
R/O and holding tank - insulate and put your tank on a pallet on breeze blocks and put an oil filled rad underneath it and a small bottle heater in with your R/O. Wizard has just mentioned putting underfloor heating under your tank.
Your storage is sorted.
Delivery:-
If you have relatively warm water in your tank then it will generally get to the brush in conditions of zero degrees or even down to -2 if you keep the flow moving. An L5 (or better) will be even better.
Freezing on the ground
Difficult one this - I tend to avoid certain windows that will drip onto pathways and drives and so blade them. You can put salt down - but that can cause "dirt on my best carpet" issues.
If the ground is snow laden or slushy I tend not to work.
This is the longest period of inactivity I have encountered (although I worked yesterday) but I believe it is short term and so do not worry over much - the nights are drawing out and spring will soon be here and we'll all be asking about the best suncream and sunglasses. 8)
I wonder what MoemGorod in Russia does?

i think the guy from russia packs himself up in a box with straw in and hiberates in the loft till spring!! ;D ;D ;D

Hiya guy's ;)
Hope ya all sound....
Some realy good post's....ya make me proud ;)
Verry much appreciated..... ;)
I'v looked at va lot and for the ammount of freezing weather we get its not worth spendin that much on summit ya gunna use for a couple months at most,iv spent ages sheeting my 1000ltr ibc & lagging pipes in van (RO in shed out way)
Still havin bit trouble,so im going to buy a car battery, plus a invertor to change volts to 240 and have a bathroom or some sort ov waterproof heater in the back of my traffic running all day while we work, keeping everything warm.....YEAH...probaly have to charge extra battery up,but.....better than a icey, non working system :'(, dont ya think....just hope it works okay man....
Bin told ill probaly get couple days working b4 i have to charge battery again :D
Anyone tried this......i'd be intrested to know if it will work okay b4 i go and do it this weekend ;D

Your van is sorted.
Sorry, but I don't understand how this would work. Why would you want to insulate your tank and then put a heater in the van?
Insulation is good at preventing heat from escaping from the tank. It's also good at preventing heat from getting into the tank.
(cf a Thermos flask. A flask will keep tea/coffee hot on a cold day and will keep ice-cream cold on a hot day.)
What you are suggesting is going to prevent all that expensive heat from the oil-filled radiator getting into the tank!
-
There have been many methods described for keeping water, pipes & van warm but at the end of the day, a solution is needed to stop water freezing on the glass.

YEP!!! yeah right mate...never thought ov that 1 gold ;) :-[
But if get the back ov the van & insulation round pipes & tank realy warm when i go home with heater plugged into my mains..........then swap to 12v blowheater all day at work running off separate battery, this heater blowing hot air inside my van all day!
maybee the insulating will attract all that heat & keep tank & pipes warm while i earn a shilling???
I think it should be sound man....??????
Ya know were im coming from gold mate dont you!
take care mate
Justin
hiya rg1 mate,
Never realy had that prob mate, just the once....mostly when the places are occupied it is warm inside what i think keeps it from freezing,
just gettin the thing going on a frosty morning.....
take care fella
justin ;)
-
maybee the insulating will attract all that heat & keep tank & pipes warm while i earn a shilling???
Sorry. It doesn't work that way. It's the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
It's the Second Law of Thermodynamics that means you have to pay gas and electricity bills and they are higher the warmer you want to be.
You can certainly insulate stuff - your tank or your house, for example. But you've still got to put some heat into these things if you want them to be warmer than the outside temperature.
So ... your original post , I think, has the best answer. If you can, either:
1 - warm the water up first and let it act like a heat storage radiator to release its heat over night.
2 - use some kind of tank heater to warm up the water and keep it warm. This is using the tank a bit like an oil-filled radiator. (Actually, it's a water-filled radiator.)
Remember, to stop things from freezing, the water only needs to be above 0 degrees.
-
Hiya Wally mate....got ya dude ;)
So now i need to be looking for some kind of water heater to turn my ibc into a big, probaly the biggest liquid heater around in the back of a van...LOL ...i know wot ya mean man,
I will now consult plumbers etc to see what kind of element i can place in tank to warm water!!!!
Forgave me wally, with the warm water in thermo tank, wont that just keep heat in thermal covering, thus only keeping water in ibc from freezing?reels & di & pipes will still freeze.....unles i leave a anti-frost heater in van also.........
Sorry dude if i ask to many Q's...just must be another way to work in freezing conditions than fork out £3000+
Thank you for your posts wally mate....ya the man dude ;)
Kindest regards
Justin

I don't think it's possible to make any hard and fast statements about what will and won't work. It depends on how good the insulation is and what the temperature drops down to. Too many variables.
The insulation on the tank won't be perfect so a little heat will be lost.. If you leave the gear right next to the tank and can put some blankets over it (so the blankets cover the tank and the gear) you might be able to keep everything just warm enough to prevent freezing.
If it gets really bitterly cold, you might need a heater as well.
Insulating the entire van is a possibility, but it doesn't sound like a cheap option. It might cost less to pay for a couple of week's worth of electricity over night than to spend a not-so-small fortune on ply lining and loads of insulation.

I think ya might be right man :-\
Im no expert on insulating,so i wouldnt be 100% sure maself........ ::)

can also leave antifrost heater in van............
If it gets really bitterly cold, you might need a heater as well.
Iv got realy thick polestyrene(s*ite speller) round ibc plus exp fillerfoam in the places i couldnt reach......but the top of the tank has nothing to insulate it,so if i heated the tank with some kind ov element, the heat would escape from top to maybee keep van,if not water in tank, from freezing
warm water in tank, frost heater overnight...think the system will run all day.....
Let ya know how it goes wally mate...we due cold snap
thank you man....ya sound fella ;)
Take care dude
Justin
-
Hiya wally & guy's ;)
Just thought id let ya all know wot i ended up doing......
ended up just cutting a strip of poestyrene from bottom ov 1000ibc,then bought this-http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4150688/Trail/searchtext%3EHEATERS.htm oscolating heater to blow warm air under tank, then moves round to reels, then finishes pointing at di bottle..... all defrosted, evens the heat out also, rather than blowing in 1 spot constant ::)
its also got a anti-frost thermo setting on it guys.......
It's doin the job @ the min
I now get up in morning and all van totaly running okay all day....so far
I think it would be a good idea to place a thermo lid on tank, just to keep that lil bit heat in water tank..........
Thats another story anyway.....
This works for me guys, but dont forget iv insulated tank, pump, pipes etc....
The big diffrence is the heat is moved around, even under tank, the di & reels......
the problem with a normal blow heater it just defrosted whatever i poined it at,rest ov gear bit ov ice in.............
Point is,dont matter how cold it is my van is ready for work on a morning ;D
Thank you all for your help guy's.....ya sound dudes
Best ov look & kindest regards
Justin

IVE BOUGHT A FAN HEATER FROM HOMEBASE WHICH HAS A FROST FREE SETTING ON THE THERMOSTAT. IT KEEPS THE VAN TO JUST 5 DEGREES
-
Hiya steve mate ;)
I had a statick blowheater 1 from b&q £15.00,kept the van okay(ish)
But i can c a big diffrence in the oscolating heater man, spreads heat allover.......
Heat risies, so you can also point the oscolating 1 down man, blows below reels, tank etc...must be better man,wot ya think dude? ???
I seem to think its the dogs man.....LOL ;D

-
what is the problem,
1 keeping water warm all day or
2 going out in morning and tank is frozen in back of van,
becasue if its 1 all i did was fill the tank up with hot water with a insulation wraped around it and box it in
and for no 2, fill up in the morning

Hiya daz mate...both problems dude....
Yeah dude problem half, well sorted now,but how do you put warm water in ya tank on a morning??? ???.....ya lost me there man :-[
Also mate the pump in van plus pipes, brush heads & reels ov hose freeze overnight...even had my brush head as hard as a brick one morning...LOL :o
Good idea putting warm water in insulated tank daz ;)
But still need to keep things from freezing overnight....
If ya read my last posts,iv insulated tank & pipes & di,then leave heater on all night blowing warm air under tank etc......left lil bit open on bottom of insulated tank to blow warm air in.....
Think it keepin it right now daz ;)
Waz freezin lastnight....the system worked like a dream all day today ;)

i put hose and brush in hall way at night, and fill up from hot water tap in morning, as i am di, if you r ro, i would put an immersion valve in the side of your tank, in shed, i woudl also insulate this and then box it in, also raise it off the floor this will help, should be pretty easy and set it at about 50, then switch it on at night as this will only switch on when water temp drops, you should then be able to transfer the hot/warm water to your van in the morning then,

well we fill up to 500lts at a time and two aquarium heaters dangled in for about 12 hours is enough for the water to feel warm( not hot) but more than enough to stop the anything freezing and it keeps the micro bore supple too.
they are a really useful thing to add to your kit and work surprisingly well!
cheers David.

ps we also insulated our tank with boiler jackets too keep the warmth in longer.

Hiya Dave ;)
Thanks for that dude......
iv already got my tank insulated with polostyrene sheets man,not the top tho ::) even tho heat rises....going to insulate top ov tank next weekend...missus recons i spend more time on van than wid her....LOL.....better dat way dave :D
so the water heaters in tank stop the pump, reels & di bottle freezing dave mate! :o
Or will i still need to keep heater in van, just anti frost 1?

do you fully submerse the water heater?

A water heater will NOT stop the van and it`s contents from freezing, your best bet is a frost stat that comes on when the temp drops to low or a fan heater that does the same as that.I use a fan heater that comes on at about 4am,if it`s a really cold day i`ll run it before i go to bed for a couple of hours and then set it to come on in the early hours of the morning therefore keeping everything frost free,if you don`t do either of these and it`s mega cold during the night you can forget working the next day.

hi justin ,
this is the van heater installed that Gav was telling you about from Bluebird .
works a treat , just set the temp and leave .
its no bigger than a shoe box - best £400 ive ever spent .
I even got a L5 to use in the cold - but i dont think it's really needed now as the propex keeps it all toasty.
its the blue box on the right :)

I spoke to him at windex this year and he said he uses isoprol (if thats how you spell it) he said he works in Temperatures of -8 and doesn't have a problem.

About 13 months ago I was asked why I thought it useful to insulate my van tank and put an oil filled rad in my van overnight - inasmuch as how can the heat from the oil filled rad get to the tank water through the insulation?
The insulation is to keep the tank water at a higher temperature. (I didn't mention that I sometimes drop a pond heater into the filler hole)
The oilfilled rad is to keep the hoses, pump, battery, poles and brushes warm.
-
Hiya guy's ;)
Thank you for that matt...didnt know ya could get a additive to stop water freezing man :o :o

Hiya Gormless Gold mate...
Iv always had to heat van all night in icey temps...to keep everything warm....strange to ask ya that question,we all need to keep water etc from freezing....
But when ya get to work it dont take long for water to freeze running through reels etc....
My tank is insulated, well most of it is,so im going to direct heat under tank all night to keep it warm ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Pond heater was a option, but mate, saves me getting heaters in & out of van & not worrying about dripping condensation onto extention leads etc &
i have even been known to drive away without unplugging heaters from garage socket......didnt realise until i got 2 miles down road to garage & someone said"youv got a wire trailing behind you, with a socket still attached"...LOL mad in it!!!
Thank you mate & take care

hi mate iam 10 miles down the road so i knoww what you,re going through!
i have a 600l tank i put 2 300w aquarium heaters in over night and had warmish water in the tank which enabled me to work today and tomorrow no probs.
theres nothing which would have helped during the week the weather and roads where just too bad.
we also put a heater in the van overnight on a frost setting.
dave.
-
these propex heaters r not like any other van heaters
they will keep yr vans systems safe n van red hot ;D ;D
-
I've not read through all replies so apologies if this has already been suggested.
You guys spend a small fortune on equipment so maybe consider a small night heater, just like you'll find in sleeper cabs (trucks).
As an ex-trucker I can vouch for the 'toastie' qualities.

Take care dave ;)
Hiya ian mate ;)
I think they more expensive bud ;)
But all in all...iv wasted nealy a full weeks work....& i know if there's heating in back of van all day, theres a lot less chance of it freezing.....
I dont mind spending £400 bar lad's.....first bit of cold weather & lost loads of work already...how much will i loose all over colder month's :'(
In fact how much will you guy's loose out on??? could be worth having a look for ya own vans!!
Another plus for me guy's....i wont have to unplug heater & plug it back in with exten leads etc....
Just jump in the van & go ;D ;D ;D ;D
As iv said in previous post,i have forgot its plugged in sometimes & just drove away....LOL ;D
Makes good sense to me guy's
Ill let ya all know how it goes fella's ;)

I have an oil heater in the van to stop my pipes freezing over night and a pond heater floating in my storage tank to prevent that from freezing but have yet to find a way of stopping the microbore freezing as soon as i start to work :(
Maybe try another pond heater in the van tank and see how that goes.

Hiya marcus m8 ;)
thing is bud,iv bin warming van up for years now....like you said, with oil filled rad....system works ok @ first then after a lil bit it starts to freeze...
Now if you could take that heater to work with you & keep it toasty in the back of ya van, might be a diffrent story man.....
Its okay warming everything b4 ya go to work, but then wot, once youv unplugged everything the cold is still there man...i have a 1000ltr ibc in back ov van, with polestyrene sheets round tank...im going to dirct heat under tank & make a thermal lid for top to keep heat in.....hopefully keep me working ;D
Pop back bud & ill let ya know how i get on with this when it comes....

hi Justin,
today i ordered the l5 heater which will give me hot water on demand to the brush head.
when its up and running come and have a look. the whole system should not cost me £200 !!!!
-
Hiya dave ;)
you okay bud!
I was looking at 1 of them mate...was watching 1 in action on you tube, guy was useing it as a shower(wasnt watching him getting showered like...LOL)
He was showing how to set it up etc & also selling them 8) realy easy & good hot water man...
Did you get it off e-bay dave mate? thats were i was pricing them, from the states i think ???
It was a toss up between l5 or the bluebird......i just thought the bluebird heater will save me putting heater in van everynight etc & i was thinking with the l5...its great to heat ya water, but,ya still have to keep pipes tank, reels etc from freezing over night before the l5......or even the next day at work....i was thinking i need to keep van & everything warm first to c how it goes....known my luck dave,id buy the l5 & the tank & pipes might freeze during the day.......
That was a option for me dave, took me a few days to decide mate ::)
Mind you im keeping it from the missus....i'd like the l5 also ;D...lol....but going to c how this goes m8......
Deffo would like a look man.....let me know how ya get on bud.......
Glad you got 1 ov them mate, just as im get the bluebird & we live next to each other....we can compare them @ realy cold temps etc.....
Thank you again dave mate
Take care & c ya soon bud

If water to cold,it wouldnt run through system, would it?
Lecky heater in van all night.....but....my tank has polly sheeting round.....so do you think the heat is not reaching wter in tank......thus maybee still frozen bits in from when everything froze last week causing the water to freeze faster than...well warmish water what heat might ov reached???? if that makes sense ;D ;D ;D
Kindest regards
Justin ;)
