i cant speak for others , i can only speak of a safe way to charge a battery and that way is to make sure all terminals are disconnected .
do it the safety way .

Many vans are equipped with split charge relays, and they charge with the pumps connected and even running (well try and charge with the pumps running).  I've never had any issues.  An ipod will charge via usb and you never disconnect the battery.  However if you want to play it safe.
