I ask for doornumber +postcode or abbreviation of housename+postcode.  It ensures they are unique references.
Trouble is that Abbey do not display the references on the faster payments system so I am moving my banking elsewhere.

On my windows cleaned tickets I have a unique reference number,.. starting with the number of tickets I've given out today & then the date. eg. the 3rd job tomorrow will be ticket number 03211209. I keep a record of all ticket numbers I give out and ask customers to use that ticket number when making online payments. Simples! :)

If its online banking ,give them your bank details on your call slip.. tell them to use house number and postcode as a reference....., along with an addressed envelope, for those who prefer cheques....and explain this on your call slip.

and at the bottom i simply add " please pay within 3 days."

works a treat.
