Cheques will be phased out by October 31 2018, the UK's Payments Council has said.
The payment method was first introduced 350 years ago but the body said cheque use was in "long-term, terminal decline".
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT RECEIVE PAYMENTS FROM CUSTIES THROUGH THE POST OR BY HAND BY CHEQUE, WHAT WILL BE YOUR STRATEGY???
D/D?
PORTABLE CARD MACHINE?
ONLINE TRANSFER?
CASH COLLECTION?
BANKERS DRAFT?
ARRANGE TO LEAVE CASH SOMEWHERE?
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS/SUGGESTIONS?

It is to be reviewed in 2016, so if it all goes pear shaped they can bring them back.
-
Cash will do :)
-
A lot of my custies pay by Internet banking, but probably 70% still do cheques. Going to be interesting then!

How does the portable card machine work? Is it hooked up to a mobile phone?
I wonder how much these cost to buy/rent/operate?
Any suggestions appreciated. :)
-
ONLINE BANK TRANSFER AND CARD MACHINE ARE MY FAVOURITE TOO. ALSO THOUGHT ABOUT A TELEPHONE SYSTEM WHERE CUSTIES CAN PHONE UP AND PAY THROUGH AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM BY CARD WITH A CUSTOMER REF NO. DONT KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS TO SET UP THOUGH.

I like the paypal link to website idea. And i think i will include some more payment options in the stationary i leave with the customer (currently a card with all the details of job and contact details, website tel no's email etc and an pre-addressed envelope)
Want to start doing this asap so everyones used to it by the time it comes around. I no its far off but ive got nearly 1000 custies and they all (except a few commercial jobs and 2 domestic jobs) pay by cash on the door or a cheque in the post! And the last 8 years have flown past! Started when i was 18 and now im 26!!!! cant believe it. feelin old ;)

Plus you need a specific merchant account from the bank for card payments, they won't allow you to use a normal business account, plus they charge a minimum of around £35 plus their transaction charges. I went through the process last year to set it up, and the total costs came to around £65 per month, I gave up on the idea because of this.

the bigger worry is when cash is a distant memory. but if we are able to take card payments at the doorstep that would be great, not sure how that sort of thing would work
-
cash will NEVER BE A DISTANT MEMORY! ;D ;DCASH IS KING!!! ;D ;D

They can pay me with gold ingots. I don't mind ;D .
Seriously though, I will need to adjust how I receive payments eventually. A few pay by bank transfer already. I will need to accelerate that at some point. Even those without internet banking can use telephone banking.
Several years ago I totted it all up. In that particular year, about 55% of my turnover was paid by cheque. I've no reason to believe that has changed significantly since then. The majority of those cheques were delivered by the postman. Probably one third of my income is delivered by post as cheques. Personally I am fine with this situation. I just scan them, sort out the deposit paperwork, and make the deposit.
I would much rather be able to take the money direct from the customers' accounts by direct debit though (subject to the usual 10 day notice period).

A financial guy was interviewed of BBC this morning and he said that for small businesses such as ours the technology already exists for them to transfer money to you using their bank card 'swiped' against your mobile phone. A mobile phone because its the technology that virtually everyone has and uses. When linked to the internet either then or later, the money will automatically be transferred to your bank account.
