Title: do u think i should stop using fairy?
Post by: dazmond on December 10, 2009, 10:01:30 pm
as im planning to go WFP in the future,do u think i should stop using fairy now and give the top frames a wipe over every now and then to decrease the dreaded spotting on 1st/2nd/3rd cleans?i have noticed some of my custys top frames are mingin as i normally only clean the glass and sill with frames as an extra for those that want it.and did u increase price during changeover as you clean all frames everytime?

eg. normal price  £6

price incl frames £7

price inclu frames and window above conny £8

price inc frames/window above conny/3 skylights £10

i didn't bother doing all the frames and stopping the use of fairy till a couple of cleans before the change over, i didn't charge more for cleaning the frames as i used this as a selling point to stop any agro with the customer and to be honest the frames dont need cleaning ever clean i give mine a once over say every 3rd-4th clean just to keep on top and never had a problem with the customer . I did charge more for extra windows above cons etc and for upvc doors if they wanted them included.

Daz the last clean before I went over to WFP i wiped all the top bars off with a wet cloth.

In hindsight it probably wasnt really necessary, however it helped to give me a little more confidence at the time with how things might pan out, nowadays new cleans are done with just the pole regardless of what the frames are like.

Oh I had also been dispensing with the Fairy and trying to just use GG4 for the last few cleans too.

yes to wiping the tops of the frames, it will help more than you think

i would find a WFP'er in your area, get a 25 L barrel of pure water from him

use the pure water and GG3 in a bucket for the last couple of cleans

you will remove the fairy residue and have a headstart with the pure water and GG3

Can`t do any harm can it? I think Fairy can make you a bit lazy when trad.

In what way ?

Some use a lot of Fairy, thus loads of suds and just "whiten" the window instead of cleaning it.
I`ve done it myself and you can leave a mess. A good low sudding solution takes a bit of getting used but is worth sticking with.  Being lazy, I would often give up with a WC soap and just go back to Fairy. Easy option you see.

I wouldn't have thought it would make a lot of difference to be honest, just rinse and scrub any horizontal part of the frame top and middle UPVC sections, I clean and rinse the frames and glass all round then I go round again and clean just the glass on first cleans, I haven't had a complaint yet, sure some just don't like the idea of WFP but they are a real minority i.e. 3 in 4 years for me and they got dumped

ive converted all my wfp jobs straight from fairy and not had any problems, a good wipe of the frames may help but to be honest just do the job right and it makes no odds in my opinion.

the only spotting ive had is from hoppers etc and i now do hoppers and then move and come back to the main window after the drips have stopped

when i changed i didnt have any problems either, i even let by back door window dry with fairy on a few times then cleaned it off with wfp, no problems, just take your time on first clean

Switching to GG3 (or even W5 from Lidl) before changing to WFP will make the transition a lot easier. Fairy leaves a lot of residue, and it takes a couple of cleans to shift it with WFP. When I switched over my Father in Law was still working with me tradding the downstairs using fairy. When he retired it was a nightmare on a few houses,.. even on the 2nd or 3rd clean I could see the residue foaming up when the water hit it.

Wiping the top frames will help too,.. but you will still need to give them a good scrub the first couple of visits wfp as all the dirt in behind the seals will leach out.

if you use gg3 and pure add twice the amount of gg3 and it will glide like fairy

Make sure you send out a letter explaining wfp methods and what it does/how it works.  This helps a LOT.  There's loads of example letters that are in the forum if you search.  Otherwise they might just think you're "cheating" with a hosepipe on a stick lol.

I used fairy right up to the change over, i just made sure that all dirt was removed from the top frame with a cloth on the last trad clean.
I asked every single custy how they dried out and everyone was pleased.
Even now 4 months down the line i still ask em how there drying out and everyone is happy

hey guys im finding this post very helpful - i am also swapping over to full time wfp in the spring and always wondered if fairy would make it harder on first cleans.

so let me get this straight -

any extra cleaning of frames isnt too important but may help a bit??

and more important is to stop using fairy for the last few cleans??

i always thought the fairy problem would be ok with a good clean & rinse for the first & maybe second clean, i thought it would have been more important to get all the really dirty bits off the frames?

ive been reading some of roy hardings old posts and he says he uses fairy on the brush for v.dirty 1st cleans then just gives the window and frames a good rinse!so i think ill stick with fairy!do any of u other WFPolers still use fairy for trad work/1st cleans?does it not make any difference really?

IMO it doesn't make much difference. It won't do any harm cleaning the top frame while still trad but the whole fairy/residue thing?
You're cleaning road grime, bird poo, spider/fly poo & anything else that cares to dirty a window off with pure water, you telling me it can't also clean soap residue off?

I used to use fairy & had some jobs that I would trad one month & wfp the next, never had a problem. IMO any problem with a first clean is down to the build up of general grime in every nook & cranny of the window & not a bit of fairy. ;)

I would be very careful, if you stop using a fairy, you could find yourself in an industrial tribunal for unfair dismissal or gender discrimination !!
