They are 3.4% plus 20p per transaction which is relatively competitive - they are the quickest and easiest way of taking online payments and they now have the brand name that people trust which you might have if you tried taking them directly yourself so I would go with Paypal.

Dash,

The only thing I would think about if taking payment via the website is on whether the price given to the customer is a quote or an estimate. If estimate, then it may be a good idea to ensure they cannot proceed unless they agree that they are aware of this.

Additionally, paypal being paypal, it is trusted which is good and has a number of API's to make use of. But paypal is and still remains more about buyer protection (despite advertising seller protection). As such it would be relatively easy for someone to defraud you and obtain their money back by unconventional means.
All I would recomend is that you get them to sign a form once the job has taken place giving their name, date and signature. Its never fool proof, but can help if ever you should be put in that situation.

Regards,

Tom.

Hello Tom

Yes we have considered this, the reson why i'm asking is because we are running 20% deposit scheme, where the deposit is to be places if the booking is fully confirmed by a customer, and we often deal with customers from london etc who send us cheque as a deposit and then the rest. However, sometimes when job is only in couple of says time is hard to take a deposit and if we dont, which we did few times been nice and decided not to delay the date jobs got canceled for a reason that they got some agency cheaper etc, so for those reasons i want an online payment which will be direct. we operate t & c sistem from day one and have them availiable in both e-mail and hard copy so we always get the customer to sign them, but then although it tells then payment terms etc it's, it's hard to make them pay the cancelation fee etc alot of time phone calls and no good return. although it's only happened few times i'm now not wanting to have the stress of dealing with it again. thats why i would like the online payment option.

If you are making a person/company sign a contract and it states in the contract that there is a cancellation fee, then provided the layout and wording is legal you have all the making of a successful small claims court.

I agree, small court claims is perhaps a bit strong but ultimately from my viewpoint it is a little pointless getting people to sign a contract if you are unwilling to uphold it and act upon it?

Tom.

We did act upon it, and got the money too, however it has taken a while to get to that stage and it wasnt worth the hassle, to keep professional image of the company we had no choice but keep on presuring them untill they did make the payment, especially after we had them sign contract. But you can imagin it's not always easy and can be very stressfull at time especially if you are dealing with companies rather then domestic customers.
