Can't see any way you could price this accurately.
You don't want to end up with a nightmare.

If I were you I'd get a rough idea how long it would take in my head, and assuming it's quite a few hours just charge for a days work.

Better to risk going over than under!

Roger.

Quote the customer an hourly rate of £40-£50 or what you consider is ok.

if u need the job mate play safe and be very careful not to underprice. If its a bonus think of a price and double it. If u dont get it youve not had it to lose and if you did get the job you will be delighted.People dont mind paying  for quality windowcleaning these days. Good luck

Can you compare it to any job you already have, or have done in the past if so try to work out a price based  on that. If not try to work out how long to do each window or each floor and times it by the appropriate amount and then add on some more just in case. Better to be to high than to low, unless your desperate for the work.

Blimey.

A difficult one that.

I'm also of the opinion of go for a very high price as they've had 2 other w/c's turn down the offer to give a quote.

When you give the quote just mentally shut your eyes and just say it as if it's normal.

We done that for one job we were asked about where we didn't have a clue about the price and had even less clue as to how to do it and we got the job.

It lasted 9 months untill the contract ended and is to date, the best commercial job we've ever had.

Cheers

Hi Shawn

Just go for it.

The commercial job I was posting about above was £330 for 2 hours work for 3 people and when I handed the quote in we all though 'no way' but it was accepted.

You'll always be wondering otherwise.

From the information you posted
I would charge between £700 to £900 for the job.
It is difficult to get it right without seeing the building though.

I dont know why the other window cleaners would be scared off by it though there are 10s of thousands of much bigger buildings who do you think does them?

Shawn,

If it were me giving the bid  I would count the number of panes and multiply by a set figure. 160 plus 100 plus 450 = 710 panes to clean.710 X $7. = $4350.00 American dollars; 2,305 pounds.

For in and out. That is a large undertaking; equipment; expertise; time; any danger involved? That is a lot of panes to clean.

If you have any snags you will be glad you are making what it is worth.

Do not underbid. There are many other things to do with your time. It is better to step out and charge what is fair and get fewer contracts; but make more per contract.

Good luck!

Hugs

Texas Girl
Im moving to the States
If you can get £3.25 for each 1/2 metre window.
My window cleaning company would be turning quite a bit more than £1.5 million a year at your rates, more than 3 times more than here >:(
On the next plane to Texas

Ah, but Glyn, they only get them cleaned once a year there; and that includes screens (the wire mesh stuff that keeps the bugs out) I think.

So the £2,305 price quoted isnt realy relevant to the UK.

Hi Glyn

There are several huge buildings around here that have had the window cleaning contract up for grabs for ages.

One, a university building that can only be done by roped access, has not had the windows done for 3 years.

I'm hoping this years to get IRATA qualified to do the rope swinging thing.

The council here is crying out for craddle certified window cleaners.

It seems that here down in the South East, there is loads of work just waiting to be done and lots that could be done with WFP.

I don't know about moving to Texas though ...... all that sunshine and stuff......

Cheers

Hi Rosskesava
If I was you I would sub contract the rope access work to a firm they does this type of work all the time. Thats what we do, there is a lot to learn and you only make one mistake in abseiling.

Hi Glyn again.

Hi Rosskesava
If I was you I would sub contract the rope access work to a firm they does this type of work all the time.

I'd never thought of that. Now that's a great idea.

What you say about abseiling is very true. A hobby of mine is rock climbing and abseiling is always the last resort when descending and as for doing it for fun, those people are lunatics.

I only wanted to do roped access for the money but now you've got me thinking.

Cheers

I was offered work in the US some years ago, it was just the basic warehouse work to get me into the country. I went there for a holiday and went to work when I was there (Florida). I wasnt there for long but i found that at the beginning and end of the day you could be anywhere in the World. Once your used to the daily grind then it is like living here you still have to work. Mind you there are some things that are better over there but when you get used to them would you still see them as improvements? Also remember the health care system. Most jobs come with health care only the starter job I was offered through a mate didnt have that benefit and it was going to cost me $700.00 a month to be covered. Some would still go but having a 10 month old boy made us decide to stay in good old sunny England.
At least here you get a good cup of tea.

Hey Stevey;

I bet you guys have the best tea on earth!

Health care over here is a wide range; but I have to say it is excellent.
When I was divorced and paid for it myself for 4 of us I opted to go with a high deductable $2000.00 to cover catastrophic circumstances.

It was $135.00 per month. It had dental and prescription coverage and allowed for 4 doctor visits per person per year for a cost of $35.00 copay.

Now that I am married to a retired military man my health care is almost free.

If you were here several years ago it may have been before health care furnished by companies was required.

Now if you have more than 10 employees you must pay for 1/2 of the premium for all policies. If you had  an HMO (Health management organization)policy then there is no deductable and no doubt was a family policy.

The laws have changed a lot in the past few years. No one is denied health care in the USA.

Even if you have no insurance, medicaid kicks in and will pay for what is needed.

There is no waiting list or requirements if you need health care.  If you are below a certain income amount your kids are covered for free.

I know about this topic because I was self employed and had to pay for my own.

$700.00 per month is not today's rates for coverage. I don't blame you for being discouraged because that is way too expensive to even consider.

The window cleaning rates are pretty good here. As I was suggesting a certain rate per pane; it evens out; easy panes along with upper story difficult panes; same price.

That is what I have adopted; per pane or per window. And the place is growing like crazy! I live 20 minutes from Fort Hood.

Recently 5000 troops were transferred here. My husband owns rental houses so he has profited as well as many other businesses.

Mine included. The yellow pages have helped me a lot. I get cold calls daily.

I think adopting a set pattern of charges is easier than other methods.

Hugs, :-*
