Title: Gutter cleaning
Post by: Ian Rochester on November 24, 2009, 07:12:46 pm
Just been asked to clean the gutters on a 3 storey property, approx height to gutters is 11-12m from the ground.

Don't really fancy the idea of this on ladders, and even then they'd have to be bloody big ones.

Anyone got any better ideas?  Will a gutter vac go this high and still "suck" ?

A guttervac will reach approx. 48ft and yes it will suck at that height.

You are not meant to use ladders above 6 metres without them being fixed to the building or other secure feature like scaffold.

Wrong.  You are not allowed to use ANY means of access above 2.2m UNLESS scaffolded.

That's wrong!
So you HAVE to use scaffold to clean windows on the 1st FLOOR?
The (2 metre) extenson to the working at heights regulation 2005 means that you can not use a ladder without an anti-slip device, if your feet (which is your lowest point) exceeds 2 metres.

that actually leave it to the user discretion but if you had a accident using ladders cleaning windows at first floor and had reach nd wash you would be at fault

I would hover above the gutter being held in place in the tallons of a Golden eagle.

Failing that I would decline the job unless you can get a vac system to reach that height.

Only if it's above 2.2m.  But obviously if you are taller than that (unlikely) you should still use some help.

does a damp scrim under the ladder feet count as an anti slip device? ( a tip given on here recently)
