Usually because someone had been very naughty.

(or they wrote something libellous, and once locked they can't deleted their comments, so it's a chance for them to poo themselves which gives the mods a good laugh)

What i like to do is start a thread, get things going a bit, maybe with ewan or someone like that, say something hugely contentious that will get him climbing the wall to give one of his mad as a hatter replies, and then lock it.(which if you started the post you can do).
