Why do people put a reserve on items on ebay? You just get loads of emails asking what the reserve is. Why not just put the starting price up??

because it temps people to bid as people are nosey, or if you are the next bright star you bid stupid amount and retract straight away and see the reserve amounT. NOT THat people should do this ::)

For what it's worth, I never put a reserve whan I sell on ebay. A guitar worth £700 odd quid went on at 99p. I ended up with over 50 people watching it, all thinking they might get a bargain. they might just fall in love enough to bid even when the price becomes sensible. It's also cheaper to list with a low start and no reserve.

Just involves more risk, what would you have done if the guitar went for 99p ?
