Title: What the.......
Post by: CARPET KNIGHTS on June 06, 2005, 04:07:30 pm
Went to price a job this morning a large house 1100 sq ft priced at £240 got the job, brilliant. Just had phone call. They cancelled the job because another company priced the job at £100 :-X

Two men and they reckon to be done in four hours. That works out at 12.50 an hour each minus insurance, diesel, liability insurance, chemical cost.

How can anybody manage that?   ???

most probably not planing to move furniture.
as for £50 towards overheads seems a little on high side,

but like you say it is cheap price,

Hi Guys,

The £10 - £12.50 an hour guys are pricing as if they work for a company with all overheads paid.

We are building businesses which need to take £40-£50 per hour to make it worthwhile.

£30/ hour is O.K but you'lll never get ahead of the game.

You will take these hits but in 5 years time the other guys will be doing something else and you will be a thriving carpet cleaner.

Cheers,

Doug

Always amazes me why the customer never asks the question "WHY" there is a £140.00 difference in price.

Do they never think that a drop of this amount might mean the work might not be up to standard or there is some catch involved.

I am sure we would all get suspicious if one was to quote £240.00 and the other £100.00.

Carpet Nights, I am sorry this happened to you, personaly it drives me mad when customers do this, I believe its wrong and its not an excuse to cancel.

You could sit in your house all day finding cheaper prices for anything, but just what are you getting in the end is the importaint thing.

Goran

What type of customer was it?

If a rental house then they dont care about quality only if it looks a bit cleaner to get their deposit back.  If its a home owner then did you explain their only working for £12 an hour minus overheads.  In a situation like this I would explain that it takes £15plus an hour to run a business even before you get paid etc etc.

Happens often.  Look forward to tomorrow.

Hi mark,

It was a rental property, but they weren't moving out they had just moved in. custy was well spoken and didn't appear to be short. they were young though. perhaps they will learn from this.

Goron

There is a carpet cleaner not far from you who charges £16 for the first carpet and £8 for every other carpet , if you ring him he’s booked solid for 6 weeks drives a BMW and has a commercial unit.
but I still get work even though I charge a lot more. there’s room for every level of service .maybe you should try and give your customer s a choice of the level of service that you will supply i.e.

bronze £50  silver £100  gold £150

this could include different thing s like clean only or clean and protect .

There,s so much you could be doing so as not to lose customers to cheaper cc,s

Neil                 ;)

Hi Neil

I know what your saying!

But at that price all i could possibly have been able to do would be the main areas and traffic areas and no furniture moved etc.
I did ask the company name but have not been able to find them anywhere

Cheers goron

ps glad to hear your getting on ok.

Forget Gold, silver and bronze services (sorry Neil!). You should continue with gold only. It's best to forget about the customers who do this to you as in the long run your clients will be the type who are willing to pay for the extra quality and you won't be over working yourself as a result.
This cusomer has let you down this time but will probably be willing to pay your prices after having their carpets drenched and ruined by those other cowboys.
