make sure you link to good ranking sites that are relevant to your industry. this will help a lot in ranking the site well as the links back to your site help google index it more. make sure your keywords and meta tags are relevant to your business. make sure you have good html links in your pages that link back to themselves. this also gives google bots more to crawl. they like to crawl so give them something :D make sure your content heavy and that each page has relevant description to what your keywords and tags are. make sure your h1 tags, h2 tags are there on each page. all these elements will have google indexing your site correctly and will push you up the rankings.
always remember that google likes to have updated info to crawl so just by tweaking it every now and then can all help within the rankings.
i changed my website a while ago and most of my pages arn't even indexed properly but because of the content of my last site and links i have coming into my site it hasn't suffered. Once i've tweaked it with my new info i will get it indexed properly again

Nat, my website is currently at the top of page one for Hinckley in Leicestershire on Google, how do I change it from Hinckley in Leicestershire to Burnham on Crouch in Essex, I have change the metatags, as you can see when you click on my website, do I need to relist it on Google?

Google likes you adding new content all the time, i have another website selling furniture and google scans this site everyday as it is well ranked under the correct search times. Basically have your website optimised, give it a sitemap, and add fresh, relevant and unique content regulary should keep google scaning your website.

advertising on google will cost you a fortune unless you can get someone who know what theyre doing to get you on there for free ;)
ive been on it and had so much commercial work ive had to give some away, some big jobs i cant reach. I picked another £85 job up yesterday so google is all good and also my webste has been brilliant but you do get a lot of jobs all over the place but i just pass them on to other window cleaners

i got a leaflet today from google with a code to advertise for free worth £30 how long will that last, and what do they mean by pay what you like per click?

Google only costs a fortune if you do pay per click (adwords). I advertised my business in local business search on google at no cost and went to top of 54 entries. I also have 2 websites on first page of organic search for the relevant search terms at no cost.
You just need to get your website site optimised correctly and you should get on the first page.

Google takes up to 6 weeks to re-spider a site,.. so sometimes it is just a case of being patient before the new keywords kick in.
Have you signed up for Google Webmaster Tools? After a few weeks it'll give you a list of the keywords as it reads them,.. very useful info for optimising a site.
Incidentally,.. do you know how many websites have the text "FAIL (the browser should render some flash content, not this)" high in their keywords list?
Its the standard text for flash insertion code,.. and google reads it like page text!

Nat, it only takes google to respider a page every 6 weeks if the page has not been indexed by google before.
If i put a link to a new website on one of my websites today i can guarantee it will be indexed by google tomorrow and it will have been crawled by monday at the latest. I have got many websites indexed for people this way. Its about getting google to keep crawling your website with regular, unique and new content.

by adding a weekly or regular blog to your site is a good way for google to keep recrawling new content

YES, loads of ways to advertise free on google, you should be able to get on the first page for local searches, always list your ad title by using keywords - If you're a window cleaner in Warrington for example don't list your title as "Joe Bloggs window cleaners" list it as " Window cleaner Warrington".
List yourself free on sites that make first page like -
Viva street
gumtree
UK Classifieds
Google maps business
Free index
Yell.com free listing
And LOADS of others.
