How can you tell if your gearbox is on the way out
Cheers

It will be difficult to change gear, and sometimes it tends to stick in gear, this is what happened to me with my astra.

Is it all gears or just one? What are the symptoms? Might be clutch, linkage or the box itself.

You don't drive a Vivaro by any chance :o

By knowing the make and model of your vehicle .i.e. if it's Trafic, Vivaro or Primastar it's probably on the way out.
Seriously, when mine went I did get a bit of warning but didn't realise at the time as I had never had a gearbox go before. On occasion I had trouble getting it into first or reverse (though this can sometimes happen even with OK gearboxes). Also, it was sometimes possible to detect a whining noise - not particularly loud but definitely there. Over several weeks, there were occasions when going from reverse to first was very difficult and had to press the clutch down a second time to complete the change. Then one night, it got stuck in first but the van wouldn't move so it was probably missing the gear. I was in the middle of nowhere on new years eve going to a gig. I ended up restarting the engine, revving up really hard, and literally punching the gearstick out of the first position. I ended up starting in second for a while after. I had to keep the water weight down and slip the clutch while in second to get it moving. Not ideal but it got me through the next week or so (and I got to the gig).

i prevoiusly had a renault laguna estate gearbox went with no warning came out of the shop one day with a puddle of gear oil below the car. it cost nearly £1500 for a new gear box and clutch from renault which i fitted myself they where scarce trying to find secondhand ones so decided to go for a new one .it is possible to get them reconditioned for about £300 depending on where you go mine wasnt as it fired a cog out the side of itself and cracked the caseing anyway a year later the clutch went causing it hard to get into gear and also the burning smell so it sounds like the clutch could be you problem especially with the burning smell was it fitted corectly?
