Some say its better to work in pairs , others say its better to have two vans and work seperately.... as two men working together never tend to do double the work.
But if you employ someone and send them off alone, how do you know if they are pulling there weight?
you may set them a target of X amount of house per day, but they are all different prices, ... e.g 20 houses at £3.00 is no good to anyone.
Do you let them know the prices, and set them a money target?
Whats the best way?
and do you trust them to tell you about new customers, instead of cleaning them themselves each month and keeping the money.?

I don't employ anymore - it's a mugs game.
But when I did.......
All my blokes were on a percentage, so they had to know the prices. They had to know anyway because they had to collect the money.
It's the only way - the more they work, the more they earn, if they don't work they don't earn.
You can factor in bonuses for reaching targets etc.
As to trusting them: if your vans are signwritten and have your phone number on them and all the paperwork ("windows cleaned" tickets etc) also have your contact details the customer is in no doubt about who his/her window cleaners are.
Tactfully point out to your men that if they do start doing 'foreigners' sooner or later the custy will need to contact you for some reason, and they will be found out and the consequences will be severe.
All employees will try it on to a certain extent, the clever employer will allow for this and let the employee think they're getting away with it. Provided it's only peanuts, it all helps with employee job satisfaction ;)

:o :o.....never work with family or friends,it will end in tears.
re working with people ... keep it small and manageable...OTHERWISE IT WILL GRIND YOU DOWN :'(.. with the right type of work yourself and a lad would be able to earn you a decent wage working 3.5 days per week this will cut out all hassles ie petty jealousies(normally lads envious of what they think you have got) others handling money, punctuality, complaints from customers ;)

Do you mind me asking what sort of percentage you paid them?
Also, if they get any new customers, what about offering them the amount of the first and second clean as a bonus? That way, you'll know.

Hmm i think that is a matter of your opinion , i was told that you sell franchises but do all the canvassing for each francisee - that defeats the object of selling a franchise doesnt it? Mugs game springs to mind!!

I would never ever trust anyone 100%, there does have to be a certain trust in staff but caution and fail safes need to be added.

Been through five staff on a self employed basis, have just taken on my first PAYE employee everything good so far. ;D
He has a morgage & a child on the way so I suppose it helps knowing he needs to earn the money!

but if a better job comes up or he saves up enough to go alone i will be see you 9 times out of 10, loyalty is a very hard thingto find in a person these days.
