Title: Yellow Pages & Google
Post by: markpowell on October 05, 2009, 03:52:25 pm
Just had a text message from Yellow Pages, after telling them that i did not want to do business with them anymore, i have just had a text message from them offering a free website guaranteed to be on the first page of Google if i sign for next book. Still not going to bother tho, they must be struggling big time.

When I worked for a C/C he got loads of work from YP too, that was going back to only 2002! That's why I thought it was a must to have have an ad in YP!

Every one seems to Google everything nowadays and this is what's taken YP's place I believe....

yeah thats true, internet taken over many things, still though many of elderly people cannot use computer, therefore paper directories are much better.

you carpet cleaners really need to think outside the box.

you can guarantee 1st page Google! With PPC

you think that a company that is going down like Yelow pages is not going to try anything new, your wrong.

Well, I'm going back in the directory this year, first time in four years. Got the buy one get one free, plus free web page. I still think the directory is a bit of a must, bloody lot of money though. Still down to £4500 +vat from the 13K I used to spend!

times have changed in 4 years emclean. i'd have a rethink. or at least a bloody good think before you spend that much, what could you do with that money if you didn't go in, an excellent leaflet campaign, or a good run in your local paper. or even better a top notch website seo'd to goodness gracious me.
but if your confident then i hope you have more luck than me. good luck skipper.

thats not SEO, thats just allowing additional info about your company.

The main page you want majorly SEO'd is your home/index page of your website.

Yell.com cannot offer this and you will always be competing with other cleaners in your category.

Least with online search engine the more you are listed on free directories providing natural direct non reciprocal links to your website, and the better SEO'd you site is the better placement on google you will have.

I get all my web action via my website - i choose to have yell.com this year to back up the professionalism as in yesteryear yell.com was the place to look for professional trades, not dodgy guys with slick websites pretending to be professional.

I have to admit, I'm not looking to make a fortune, just cover my costs. The reason being I have noticed a big drop in commercial enquities since dropping the directory. I still service all the commercial jobs I picked up from YP in the past so I have got my money back, and £4500 wont skint me (hopefully), and I can get the VAT back, so worth a gamble (hopefully)

Cheers

This is how i look at it. Why are they offering a free website on the first page of google?
If Yell.Com is as good as they reakon, why not give you a free listing on there, they are admitting that Yell is pants and that we all know that Google is the place to be if you use the internet as a marketing tool.
I have done YP for many years and slowly watched it slip down hill year on year, they will never see another penny from me that is for sure.

Got to say YP is still great for me and despite my reservations Yell has been far better than I anticipated.

Am I right in saying you're in the same area as me? That'll be the Basingstoke, Guildford, Alton edition at about 1.0 inched deep. The same book that used to be Basingstoke and Guildford at 1.5 inches deep and no doubt a few years back was probably just Basingstoke at 2.0 inches deep.
ok businesses advertising in it is clearly dying but with less competition in a larger area would probably bring in more work pro rata.

I've put my money into yell.com this time and we are bringing in more than the monthly outlay.

I get jobs from Yell.com and for the price it's fine, but I get far more from websites and they cost about, well next to nothing. :-\
