What can you recommend? I want high quality sound, no stupid tuning dials that moves, no extending aerial, don't want a mobile phone, ipod or Mp3 player just a quality fm radio with external earpiece. :)
-
i use my ipod, but getting bored of my music and would like a radio too...
sure you can get a radio adaptor for ipods somewhere, if you have one too?
-
Had this dilemma myself a while back.
I use the radio on my Sony Ericsson phone - I know you said you didn't want a mobile phone, but the signal is brilliant and you just put it on charge rather than keep changing batteries.
There is an FM 'add-on' for the ipod - I think it's about £40 in HMV.
-
For my phone to work as a radio you need to plug the earphone in, dont want all that malarky, anyone got other suggestions. Surely things have moved on from the days of long ago when if you moved half a centimetre or twizzled round the signal was lost?
Isnt there anything on the market worth buying with an almost faultless reception capability without earphones?
-
I bought a £30 radio from Maplins a few months ago - wouldn't work unless the aerial was fully extended - utter trash.
I'm sure there are some minature dab radios about these days but I want to try before I buy.
-
All the mini dab radios need an earpiece I think. I always want one with external speaker. Nothing loud. Just so I can hear Talksport all day I love my radio. When I was trad I even tried taping one to my point, but often found I was too far away and didn't want it blasting, nor would the customers I doubt.
My mini Sony pocket radio packed up a couple of months ago. I was gutted at the time. It was great. It had a digital display and tuner and a little yellow lock button so it didn't change station or anything whilst in your pocket. It was a tad too quiet though.
I bought another Sony, slightly bigger, and it's been great. It takes two AA batteries as opposed to AAA so they last a lot longer. I did have to electrical tape the analogue dial in place so I didn't knock it off station getting it in and out of my pocket. That was a couple of months ago and it still hasn't moved. It's a shame the radio's not a bit lighter though. I'd be totally lost without it though.
I think it's definatley worth getting a branded one else the cheap one's I've tried start buzzing when you turn around etc. There's only a couple of places on my round that I get interference and have to turn it off. I think this is someone's old analogue telephone or something.

I have "two" ner ner ner ner ner.....roberts radio's...........yep with external speaker...........and my itouch.connected to an..........external speaker. If i get bored o the rad i change over and vice versa. Unfortunately the roberts radio has become obsolete...hence i bought 2. Best thing about havin an external speaker is you can hear when the punter is callin ya name.....well moreso than havin headphones on anyways ;)

I have a little pocket DAB radio, earpiece only, no crackling as it's digital, but as mentioned above a bit heavy on batteries.
I also have a little wind up radio, no batteries, just wind up and listen, built in speaker, only lasts about 10 to 15 minutes from winding it up for a minute or 2. That couple of minutes stood winding it up starts to feel very long when your doing it every 15 :-\

For any one with an iPhone then there is a fantastic radio app called Radiobox. Hundreds of Internet radio stations including the BBC stations or another one is wunderRadio and I can get local radio on this one.
-
Went to Maplins today, they had zilch, then Currys, they had zilch and then Comets, they had one on display but it wasnt in stock.
Just looked at this

seems pretty tasty according to the review.

I have ordered a Sony SRF-S84 from Amazon but with a different headset.
-
Ive just reserved the above model I mentioned. I bet its better than yours ;D
Pick mine up tomorrow at Argos.
-
Look, why not save money, just wack the radio full blast in your van and leave the doors open ;D ;D
Just don't tune into radio 4 ::)
-
There's always one aint there? ;D
-
The best by far is the sony srf m97. It uses 1 aaa battery (about 3 days usage) There are 5 presets on mw(talksport &radio 5) and it has a jog wheel so is very smooth and easy to turn stations.I get mine off e bay, imported.
Nice.
-
What other radios have you compared it to?
Is the model you are refering to a DAB?
-
No it is not Dab.Do not bother with pocket dab radio,s. They Squelch in and out on the move and they absolutely eat batteries(i did read somewhere that dab needs 8 times the power of none dab!!! When i say dont bother it is because i listen to 5 live or talksport all day and the reception on those through dab is appalling!!
-
Got my Sony SRF S84 this morning - brilliant! Superb sound and weighs about the same as a box of matches. Can't believe the sound quality.
-
(http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/../uploader/2009Q4/Photo-0133.jpg)
This is DAB and FM, so the best of both worlds.
Sound is good. Im not going to go aboard like everyone else on the sound quality, but it is FANTASTIC!! ;D
-
What's the sausage for next to it?
-
Hi Matt what do you listen to? What is it like with 5 and talksport?
-
I want to be able to listen to a few talk shows, like TalkSport and Radio 4. But also Radio 2 and a local station round here.
TalkSport reception is very good on it as was 5.
You can store the channels and also lock them so any knocks doesnt affect it.
The button in the middle is to mute it, should a custard come out and ask you what the hell all that music is in her back yard! And to save you shouting when she wants to discuss her yearly gutter clean ;D
-
'They' let me out today for the first time with my radio ;D ;D
Despite the poxy weather I still went out, I wasnt going to sit at home waiting to be able to use it for another day. Anyway, chuffed as nuts with it. Great reception in general, certainly good enough for me. Was great to have Steve Wright accompany me this afternoon whilst I was at work.
Good investment.

Matt where do you live?I am in the midlands and have tried pocket dab and it was absolutely useless for what i like listening to.
-
I use a pocket DAB the reception is much better than I get for FM.
I don't like wearing headphones - far too dangerous, bad for your ears & can seem ignorant when a customer is shouting you & you can't hear them.
I now use this - sounds great, keeps hands free, can hear all around you & others nearby amazingly can't hear it. - Great for cycling too.

It holds your mobile in the other pocket too.
-
Hmmm. Looks good. Do you use it with MP3 too?
Gerry.

In Hampshire mate. The radio I got has also got FM on it. One of the guys in one of the shops I ventured into said make sure you get a radio designed specifically for radio rather than an MP3 player with a radio tacked onto the side. They wont do half as good a job.
As this thing I got has got FM you can change it about if you like. My local radio station doesnt broadcast DAB so I listen to that on FM but radio 2 i listen to DAB as well as other stations.
Its a good radio, for sure, I also bought a pair of earphones that are designed with thos bendy bits that tuck round your ear so you dont have to have these great lumps stuck into your lugs. They almost hang down the sides and just are held in place with the loops so not uncomfortable.

Don`t use my radio much but it`s very rarely on DAB when I do. It really does muller the batteries and I always forget to stock up on them.
I might modify one of my old string vests, so I can have one of those like 4seasons :P. They do look good though.
Gerry.

Battery charger?
-
I`ll have to get re-chargeable batteries now. And a battery charger :'(.
Nah, I`m not that bothered, I`ll never charge them anyway.
It`s hard work being so lazy ::).
Gerry.

Gerry.
Yeah, in fact I use mp3 player most of the time.
-
Could listen to radio and MP3 then.
Thanks for your posts.

Hi,
While listening to the radio on my old nokia via head phones i am able to be alerted to an incoming call, just press the button on the headphone wire to answer. I assume listening to a non Mobile radio you will miss your calls?
