Title: charging relays

can some one help me out please. i want to install a charging relay in my tranny to charge a 110 leisure battery can i use a standard 30 amp relay with a switch in line so i can turn off if i need to. the alternator on the van is putting out so i was told today 105 amps am i right in thinking 30 is to small  any info would be great?

would love to help you out but my van came with split relay already done

I use to have a 100 amp split charge relay in my Iveco Daily connected to the 110amp van battery to trickle charge 2 x 110 amp leisure batteries (1 for heater and 1 for pump).

Now I have a VW transporter I can't connect a split charge relay to the battery because of the engine management sensors. I've had to fit a 35 amp smart split charge relay to the alternator instead as the van battery is only 65 amps.

A split charger will never allow the van battery to run flat as it always ensures the van battery charges for the first 5mins whilst the engine is turned to fully charge the van battery before running surplus amps to the auxiliary battery. Not much point fitting a switch to the split charge relay as it won't overcharge.

The alternator fitted to my 04 2.0Hdi Citroen Relay is a 150amp and I have a standard Split Charger Relay bought at the local motor factors for £9.00.
It's wired up the the alternator charge wire to power the relay and the battery to the 2nd leisure battery via a 15amp fuse. Using the alternator warning lamp lead, you ensure that your battery is charged automatically the moment the engine is running, but the battery's are keep 'separate' at all other times. This is the same way caravaners do it.
No problems to report as yet.
It's exactly the same unit that I removed from my 1.9D which had a 95amp alternator and it worked perfectly in that van for a year and a half.
As nearly all of my customers are within a 6 mile radius from home, the van doesn't do enough mileage to keep the leisure battery fully charged (although the van battery is always fully charged) so I top it up on a weekend with a separate 6amp battery charger.
