Title: it's a shame but anyone interested in buying... (and a Thank you!)
Post by: rl on September 28, 2009, 04:08:50 pm
well I only bought my Window Cleaning Backpack a couple of weeks ago as well as my Xtel Pole (7 section 34ft reach) Glass fibre. But unfortunately i'm going to have to sell them, long story but hopefully will be able to start up next year sometime.

So if anyone is interested in buying them off me let me know or they'll be going on ebay. Looking for about £95 for the backpack with microbore tap (cost just over £120 used 3 times). This will connect directly to the Xtel pole. This cost just over £185 would like about £ 160 for this, used 3 times aswell. If anyone is interested let me know, if not thanks anyway.

Whilst i'm here i'd like to say a big thank you for all the help you guys have given me over the past few weeks and hopefully i'll be looking for more advice from you when i'm able to get up and running. And i'll keep looking in to see what your all talking about.

Cheers again.  :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I know I was so eager! To be honest, we're planning on having another baby and I'm just too worried about giving up my job when the wife will be off work for a year. Having seen so many people doing w/c in the past couple of weeks, I'm worried it could all go a bit pete tong! I'd love to do it but when it comes to my days off work i'm that knackered from the 47 hours i've just worked I haven't got it in me to get out there. I'm not affraid of hard work but I have to spend time with my wife and 4 year old girl or life would be even more crap!  Honestly I hope one day I'll be able to do it but just now I'm to worried. I'm selling the backpack and pole cos it's virtually brand new and the cash would be handy with xmas coming up.

Thanks again.

WILL GET THE BACKPACK AND POLE DELIVERED NATIONWIDE IF ANYONE'S INTERESTED.

see now i'm looking around on here, i'm getting the bug to want to get out there and do it again, plus my step dad just rang and said he saw a woman who owns a pub thats desperate for a window cleaner. But at the same time I saw (and I'm not joking) 15 window cleaners that I have never seen before, in the last week on top of the 10 I see about every day.  ???  ???  ???  ???  ???  ???  ???  ???  ???

Now only you know if it's worth pushing on and trying to establish your self, but is leaving it a few months and trying again next year going to change how much competition is out there.

What is it that is making you doubt your self(if it's not to personal to say), you have to remember what it was that made you want to do it in the first place.

I'm like you just a newbie.I'm trying to do this part time along side a job that i hate and want to be rid off and it may take a little longer than I had hoped to get to a level where i can ditch my job. But I'm just going to stick with it and give it my best and hopefully be on here next year making a decent living out of working for myself.

But what ever you decide then all the best  ;)

make christmas your motivation to get more work, youll make more money out of the backpack then you will selling it, youll get £255 by selling them but even if you get 5 custys cleaned a week at say £10 each £50 a week youll earn about £600 from now till christmas just for say 2 hours a week work, you wouldnt need to do much canvassing for that amount of work, plus offer fascia and soffit cleans youll have plenty in the kitty mate.

There are lots of wc'ers around, but there are lots of windows too.

and also not all window cleaners are any good.. many are rude, do a crap job or go awol.

In this economic climate, a good stable job is hard to find, so think carefully about keeping your job.

Working for yourself is hard work - Too many just see what a window cleaner can bring home in a day and think - "Thats for me!"

....but, they forget about the running a business side of things, and the time and effort, and money! that that takes. (just maintaining a WFP system eats into your standard 9-5 hours, and therefore family time)

plus, No paid holiday, sick pay, paternity/maternity leave, than there's the paperwork involved of running a succesful legitimate business.

However, if you quit your job and put 47 hours a week into canvassing a round and then into actually cleaning windows  (and learn to stick it out, taking the rough with the good), you'll do well, no doubt.  8)

Just my thoughts...

All the best with whatever you choose.

Maybe the 34' put you off.

You need a 17'. Get one and try again.

That's how simple it is. Lads back me up.

Don't give up mate. I ditched my window cleaning round last summer mate and regretted it ever since. I've been pushing to get it started ever since and its took me ten months to get back to having work on a daily basis. Plus everything seems much harder going through the same motion for a second time and canvassing seems worse the second time round. Do it as a hobby in a bit of your spare time. Just don't give up

Maybe wait till after Christmas has been paid for then try again.  Don't be afraid of leaving your comfy regular wage, running your own full time business boosts your confidence, pride, income (if your not on a fantastic wage now), and flexibility during working hours.  Maybe that flexibility might mean in future you'll be able to take time out to drop off/pick up from nursery or any of the other many things that take up time during the day with a child.

I'd think very carefully before selling the equipment off.  You will get work even with all those other cleaners around if you canvass without giving up.  As said, they won't all be great at the job, maybe you will ?

You'll probably hear plenty of people trying to knock you down too -  " a window cleaner, really, I wouldn't do that for a living "  OR " most people already have a window cleaner "  OR " you'd be mad to give up your job "
These are usually work colleagues or relatives who don't have the ambition that you clearly have.

That sounds familiar, had a few folk say the same to me. As for giving up a full time job, that is the trickey part, just when do you do it ? Do you just go for it and canves and clean the next day or do you build it up on your days off untill you have a full day every week then go for it ?

If you still have the drive, then keep the back pack and do it slowly.

Thanks very much again guys for the supportive words.

I think I'll hold on to the backpack and pole, just for now at least, until i've decided for sure. Sorry for messing the guys about that were interested in buying it, if I do decide to sell I will let you know first.

I think really the thing that had put me off most was seeing so many people w/c that I'd never seen before. My area isn't that big (Lancaster/Morecambe) and to have counted at least 20+ w/c I just started thinking there's too many people doing it. But having read your advice I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks again, a great bunch of guys!!!

It's a 'no-brainer' when put like that, isn't it?

Or do you feel that you've got the wrong equipment?

You might prefer a van 'set-up' with a shorter, lighter pole (17 foot) - but you'd have to give 3 storey properties 'a miss'
