I cant answer the question, but, why (if this hasn't happened already) isn't a reel manufactured that has gearing in it, so instead of one rotation of the cranking handle produces one rotation of the wheel that 1rotation of the crank produces 2 rotations of the wheel.
-
I supose it's because people like Slumpy can't even manage to turn a reel with no gears? ;D

It is a Hannay reel. They used to retail for £270 + VAT (price may have increased) without hose. I've had one for 3 1/2 years and it works well.

They are hannay reels, I have 2 installed by waterfed pole systems. Very good, they take 100 meters of 1/2 Inch hose, changed mine over to microbore now, they would take 200 meters of micro. It is a 1 turn handle to drum set up, however these reels have good braking systems on them so they don't free wheel and make a mess.

In my local B&Q today they had a metal lightweight Gardena hose reel with 40m of good quality hose with all the fittings reduced from £99 to £50.
