the FIRST thing you need to do is test your water TDS with a TDS Meter:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/THE-BEST-TDS-METER-FOR-WATER-FED-POLE-WINDOW-CLEANING_W0QQitemZ250488901263QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HomeGarden_CLV_Cleaning_CA?hash=item3a524d4e8f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
fill the cap from the tap then put the meter into the cap.
it will measure in PPM (parts per million).
the water that is used for wfp cleaning is between 000-005ppm, with the ideal and usual being at 000.
you may live in a soft water area but it will not be soft enough to use without being made pure.
if it is less than 50ppm then you can just use a DI vessel to bring the water down to 000ppm, if its higher then it may be more cost effective to go for an RO filter, which then goes to a DI. either way you need a DI.

hose goes on the inlet from tap
hose goes on the outlet to tub or tank or backpack.
the first step is to know your water
